US teen gunman's lawyers seek mistrial

Lawyers for a teenager charged with shooting three people amid civil unrest in Wisconsin last year have called for a mistrial.

Kyle Rittenhouse's defence asked that the case be dismissed after the judge angrily rebuked prosecutors for airing apparently inadmissible evidence.

Mr Rittenhouse, 18, sobbed earlier in court as he took the stand.

He testified that he killed two men and injured a third on 25 August 2020 on the streets of Kenosha in self-defence.

US lawmakers approve $1tn in infrastructure spending

The US Congress has passed a landmark $1tn (£741bn) infrastructure spending package, delivering a major domestic win to President Joe Biden.

Negotiations over the sweeping public works bill - which passed the House of Representatives with 228-206 vote - created a bitter split among Democrats.

Meanwhile the House is moving forward with a more ambitious social spending bill favoured by liberal lawmakers.

Covid-19 deaths pass five million worldwide

More than five million people are known to have died of Covid-19 worldwide, 19 months since the pandemic began, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Vaccines have slowed the death rate, but some health experts say the true toll could be far higher.

The milestone comes amid warnings from health officials that cases and deaths in some places are rising for the first time in months.

French president says Australian PM lied over submarine deal

French President Emmanuel Macron has said Australia's PM Scott Morrison lied to him about a scrapped submarine deal.

Asked whether he thinks Mr Morrison was untruthful, the president replied: "I don't think, I know."

Mr Macron was furious after Australia cancelled a $37bn (£27bn) deal to build 12 submarines, and instead negotiated a new defence pact with the US and the UK - the so-called Aukus.

Mr Morrison denies that he was dishonest.

President Joe Biden has begun a series of diplomatic meetings in Europe ahead of next week's key UN climate summit, COP26 in Scotland.

UK boat detained by France amid fishing rights row

A British trawler has been seized by France and another has been fined, amid an escalating row over post-Brexit fishing rights.

French maritime minister Annick Girardin said the ships were cautioned during checks off Le Havre overnight.

She said the first did not comply right away and the second was not allowed to fish in French waters so was detained.

Pope Francis to visit Canada for indigenous reconciliation

Pope Francis has agreed to visit Canada to assist with ongoing reconciliation efforts with indigenous groups, the Vatican said on Wednesday.

The trip follows disturbing revelations this spring about the indigenous children who died while attending residential schools.

The Catholic Church was essential in the schools' founding and operation.

UK recognises Covishield as COVID-19 vaccine; grants no respite to Indian travellers from 10-day quarantine
