Four months after Vaughn's murder by the traitorous Gordon Dean and his associate Ivan Curtis, a grief-stricken Sydney teams up with Renée Rienne, a French freelance assassin and fugitive on the CIA's most wanted list who knew Vaughn from their past association with Prophet Five, to ask for leads in order to track down the killers before they can strike again. Meanwhile, Jack enlists a reluctant new agent, Thomas Grace, as Vaughn's replacement at APO, and Weiss struggles to decide whether or not to accept a promotion that would force him to move to Washington D.C. and leave his colleagues at APO. During this time, Sydney, Dixon and Weiss travel to Amsterdam to track down Curtis who is in the process of buying a potential weapon.
Four months have passed since Vaughn was gunned down and Sydney has finally found a lead that takes her to his killer, Ivan Curtis; the problem is he is in possession of a vial of 'nuridium'. This vial was one of six stolen and it is believed his organisation have the remainder and its most likely use is to make a bomb; a bomb that Marshall estimates would be fifty times as powerful as the one dropped on Hiroshima. Sydney is not pleased that this means they will have to let Curtis escape. It won't be long before they meet again as they had planted a tracker on him. By the time the tracker activates he is on a plane en route to Pyongyang in North Korea with the rest of the nuridium; this means that Sydney, Dixon and Weiss will have to board the plane mid-air if they wish to stop him! Once on board Sydney makes a startling discovery about the real use of the nuridium but is interrupted by Curtis; after a brief standoff Sydney gains the upper hand but Curtis would rather die than tell her anything about the people he is working for. As the episode ended Vaughn's replacement arrived.

After the surprising revelations in the previous episode this one was more routine; that isn't to say it was boring though. There was plenty of action including a gunfight aboard a plane, a scene where Weiss is attacked with a sword and Curtis's 'escape' where Sydney kicks him though an upper-storey window into a canal! The boarding of Curtis's plane, which was almost identical to a scene in the film 'Executive Decision', was far-fetched to say the least but if you can't suspend your disbelief you shouldn't be watching 'Alias'! The regulars put in a good performance as did guest star David Marshall Grant who played Curtiss; pity we are unlikely to be seeing him again! Four months after Vaughn's murder, Sydney manages to locate the elusive Renée Rienne, the woman that Vaughn was working with when they were trying to learn the truth about their fathers and their involvement in the top-secret project Prophet Five. With Renée's help, Sydney gets a lead on the man who pulled the trigger and killed Vaughn, and with some more help from the still-imprisoned Sloane, she, Dixon and Weiss go to Amsterdam to intercept a meeting that the killer has planned with an arms dealer. Meanwhile, Jack goes to Washington to enlist a new agent for APO. The major advantage that the beginning of season 5 definitely has over the same period of season 4 is the return of long-term storytelling, intricate mysteries and Oh-My-God cliffhangers. Vaughn's murder functions like Sydney's missing two years at the start of season 3 - it will probably keep us busy for quite a while. The three season newcomers - Rachel Nichols, Élodie Bouchez and Balthazar Getty - get minimal screen time; Bouchez shows the most potential, as a character with shifty loyalties and more edge than the ultra-sweet Nadia (after twisting a guy's arm and bashing his head against the wall: "You still think it's sexy?" - My response: "Hell yes!"). Speaking of Nadia, what happened to her? Still in a coma, dead, or what? Has Sydney forgotten her little sister? And why is Sloane still in prison? Didn't he help sabotage Elena Derevko's plans and save the world four months ago? I must also add that some of Marshall's capabilities in this episode are a bit far-fetched, even by his standards. And did Greg Grunberg get not one, but TWO fight scenes to himself as a farewell gift? (Weiss is getting a promotion and moving to Washington) *** out of 4.
