its a good game but a little vauge on whats gonna happen like when you on the second level (not including prolog) the mage guy tells you to attack the goblins blocking your path but that does not tell you that that will make all goblins hate you soo i guess other wise its a good game and is easy to run litteraly can be run on the 1\\4 of a toaster proccesing power of my desktop. I had known this game for a f#ckload of time. However I had only played the demo back then, and had played the first levels of the original game. When it went down a lot at a sale, I decided to give it a try and see if it was worth it. As usual I'm gonna start by what the game does poorly and go up from there, so you know what to expect.

First and foremost, the biggest problem this game has is the padding. Units are slow and objectives usually tell you to go here, then go there, making you waste a ton of time just looking at the screen doing nothing.

Something related to that is that troops at times get stuck going from one place to the other. If an unit has 8 or 6 soldiers, it's very common for one to get stuck around a rock while the others leave; at a certain point the other units will still try to reach the place where you wanted them to move but will be unable because of the one stuck and it can be a nightmare to track down where the trapped one is. Even worse is when you finally reach to them and get them out for them to get stuck on something else entirely.

The story is also not that exciting. Mainly because the game is so slow at times, but stuff important to the story barely happens and when it does, it's a bit underwhelming.

There's also one thing that I don't like at all and it's how you gotta buy units and manage them in an RPG style, but you'll be unable to refill those units later on. Let me explain: the first map allows you to either hire humans or goblins. If you pick goblins then you'll be able to refill and upgrade those troops on that map, and even the two next maps. If you pick humans you won't be able to refill dead units or upgrade them for over 4 missions, making you choose into holding to a 8 troop unit that only has 1 or 2 left in hopes of being able to save this Badass upgraded unit on the next one or letting go of it and picking one that this stage has to offer, which might give you the same problems later.

There's a few problems and issues on the game, either being oversights or glitches they're kinda annoying. Things like the level upgrade to see what enemies are hiding in a dungeon and being able to see an enemy's HP not working at all or the objectives not being completely clear at times.

Lastly, the voice-acting is... Well, quite weird. A LOT of character share the same voice, and other characters just don't sound right. There's also some weird stuff with the soldiers and their voice-clips, if you send an order and then move close to them they'll all say their move quotes at the same time really damn loud, and I've also noticed the music going more silent at times for no reason during gameplay, to then rise up all of the sudden.

Is it good, though? It's debatable, but it depends on how you look at it.

The maps are \u2665\u2665\u2665\u2665ing huge and have plenty of enemies, which is indeed a good thing since you'll be moving from here to there a ton of times and it can get boring when there's nothing to destroy. I do think that some enemies seem way more powerful than others (for example on the 4 stage there were f#cking fairies that would deal 3 or 4 times more damage than any other enemy on the map), but it does give you time to get a good plan of attack before going in.

There's also the fact that you're not just some random camera floating around, for once you're given a real reason for having onmipresence: you're a mage using weird magic to have some sort of ethereal body that can fly and cast spells. Which doesn't really make sense half of the time as your ethereal body is given books that he can somehow hold or you don't move from the place where you were using the spooky ethereal spell and your troops are literally at the other side of the country but it's better than nothing.

The game also offers a good enough branching when it comes to leveling up and learning new spells. Basically, you get experience for doing all kinds of stuff and you trade those experience points for whatever you feel like. I do see that after a few levels the experience points needed to level up the four basic stat-things raises up way too much, but the game also offers random stat-point-rune-drops at random that will let you level something else for free.

I also like the random drops, though there's problems with it. Mainly that you might get items that, if given to an important character for the story, will make your save game unbeatable. For example on the second map I found a weird ring and I decided to give it to the story-relevant mage that was following me at the moment. The ring turned him into a stupidly powerful demon... To then die 30 seconds later. And dropping the ring did nothin, once it was equiped he was dead, and it sucks because the description of the items are really vague about what they do.

The troop system is also interesting. Instead of having to build towns and stuff like that, you just hire soldiers that you'll level up and gear up. Though as interesting as it might be, I've already talked about the bunch of problems that those units carry behind them.

Do I recommend this game? It's a tough answer. It mainly comes down to it's price; the game might have issues but for a base price of 5\u20ac and quite some drops of it on sales, I'd say it's worth a purchase during one of them IF you're interested in old strategy games that might haven't aged too well and have the patience to get through it's slow gameplay. If you don't feel too confortable about it then you could just skip it. The story is the main focus and... Well, it sure isn't too much. I tried my best to finish it and I just couldn't bring myself to it as I just get bored over and over, however for barely an 1\u20ac I did get over 8 hours of decent enjoyment and that sure counts.

TL;DR Edition: An old game with plenty of issues. The game can be really slow, has a handful of glitches that make it grow stale on you and I sure as hell I've heard the same voice-actor do over 12 characters. It has decent ideas though, and if you can look over it's issues you might find some really cheap fun out of it during a sale.. The game is old and it's noticeable via the graphics, but it runs smooth and it doesn't hurt the game play. I can't tell about the other languages, but at some parts English voice overs were not so good. Despite all this I do like the game. It's something different and the story kept me interested. The characters are interesting and the game has a lot of diversity.

Battle Mages <\/a>, so it has almost the same interface and graphics, but the game is a stand alone installation. It has some changes though, but I won't go into them right now.

Battle Mages: Sign of Darkness delivers a lot more game play and story than the first game did. It has four different campaigns, each having their own focus on the main story. They each offer a different character, different combination of skills and availability of resources and troops, so you can experience the diversity the game offers.

You play the game by assembling an army, to complete quests, fight enemies to make the world a safer place and help those who need it.

You have a wide variety of available troops from human, orc, elf and goblin races including close range fighters, long range troops, mages and even heavy artillery. You buy your troops in towns. As you fight enemies, you and your troops gain experience. Your troops get stronger with each level of experience and when a unit reaches level 4, you can upgrade them to a better unit, but some units can't be upgraded and have only one level. Upgrades can be done in any available town of the right race (human troops get updated in human towns etc.). Not all kind of towns will be available though, since you will travel to far away lands.

You aid your troops with spells, healing and empowering them, summoning Magical spirits to aid them. You also have a wide variety of damaging spells you can use on your enemies. Spells require mana to be cast, with no mana you can cast only the spells you put in quick access (F5-F9, F10 summons Magical spirit and can't be changed). After casting a spell from quick access, it takes a while to regenerate. When you gain experience, you can use it to learn new spells, learn new skills or upgrade your max mana, mana regeneration or maximum army size and more. When you reach a new level, a new set of spells gets available.. Old But Gold. it's an easy badge to craft. this is a slow moving game. you fly around the map in this high camera position controling troops that fight enemys on the map. There is some leveling up. Im sorry I just dont see anything special about the game.. If you have a problem with running the game, such a "cannot initialize 3d". Try this.

Cleverness: As other Battle Mages games it takes an interesting twist on the notion of a "hero unit" in the RTS genre. The hero is you, a mage who is astrally projecting around the battlefield. You command your units like a normal RTS, and your hero unit can cast spells, like a normal RTS. The main differences that make this game clever is that the levelling options for your hero are much more interesting than most hero units in the RTS genre. Four skills that each have a base effect, plus 16 levellable perks that are unlocked by the four base skills. Plus your spellbook which can grow over time.

Polish: Not much to say here except that the game doesn't have a lot of polish, even for a game released in 2005. The camera controls are cumbersome. The targeting is not very clear or precise. The user interface is not very intuitive. There is far too much "waiting for your troops to get to where you are" parts of the game. And the worst part are the bugs. Rarely do they break the game, but saving early and often is a good idea.

All in all, for fans of the RTS genre, who don't mind some rough ed...
