Choosing An Aftermarket Knife Sheath

The most important accessory for any fixed blade knife is a good sheath. A lot of knives are sold with sheaths, but more often than not a factory sheath is going to leave something to be desired. A lot of time these sheaths are just a low cost option that are thrown in with a fixed blade knife to “complete the package.” Unless you are buying a pretty fancy knife, you are probably not going to be rocking a sheath that will be turning heads. One way to upgrade is to find an Aftermarket Knife Sheath.

There is a lot to consider when you are trying to find the perfect knife sheath. Everyone is going to have their own preferences on how they want to carry their knives. Despite the fact that most sheaths are designed to attach to a belt loop, many knife users prefer an aftermarket knife sheath that uses a dangling system or a side mounting sheath. Some folks might also not care about carrying their knives on a belt and just need a sheath that can be securely attached to their pack.

What is going to cause the most disagreement among knife enthusiasts is the material used to make the sheath. For a long time a leather sheath was pretty much the only option available, but the invention and development of plastics have led to new sheath materials growing in popularity.

LEATHER
Despite the trend towards new space age materials, leather will always remain the material of choice for many knife owners. The human race has been producing leather sheaths since knives were still made of knapped stone. In the thousands of years we have been working with leather, craftsmanship has evolved to the point where amazing intricate designs can be produced. Leather sheaths are also quiet and gentle on blades, though they can dry out and lose their shape over time.

NYLON
One of the alternate materials that offers a performance similar to leather is nylon. Nylon is a woven textile made from fine strands of plastic. While they are rarely as impressive to look at, nylon sheaths can handle almost any weather conditions or terrain without issue. They are flexible, quiet, and non abrasive. Woven nylon sheaths with a plastic insert are lightweight, fairly durable and work well. Like leather, nylon sheaths can lose their shape after extended use.

KYDEX
Finally there is the new kid on the block, the Kydex sheath. Kydex was originally designed as a sturdy thermoplastic that could be used to make strong but lightweight airplane interiors. Kydex sheets, upon being heated between 350 and 400 degrees fahrenheit, become soft and pliable. This means they can be used to form sheaths by molding them around a knife. The sheets will retain their shape once they return to room temperature. These sheaths are ideal for knife users who want a sheath that is rigid to offer maximum protection. A kydex sheath can be a little loud, but they’re a weather resistant option that will form perfectly to your knife.

To find a wide selection of aftermarket knife sheaths, you need to check out The Knife Connection. The Knife Connection carries a wide range of sheaths including pre-molded Kydex sheaths for many of their popular knife models. You will also find leather sheaths in several sizes so you can find the perfect option to fit your knife. If you have any questions about the sheath options they carry, you can reach out to a member of their team by calling 1-866-336-2834 or send an email to [email protected].
