Pokemon game ported to the PC from Nintendo DS.
Pokemon Black and White editions are typical of most Pokemon games in that they're split between two basic modes, exploring the global map and combat. There are a variety of menus with which to manage your Pokemon collection and, in true classic RPG fashion, there are support items to use, experience to gain and Pokemon to level up and, ultimately, evolve into more powerful forms. Although the context is fairly childish, the combat mechanics are fairly in depth and very stat based. There are 15 types of Pokemon, ranging fromt eh classic water, fire, earth and wind and extending into stranger dragon and poison types. Every type has an anti-type ( water is strong against fire, for example ) and making use of these strengths is key to winning battles. New to Black and White editions are rotation battles and triple battles, where three Pokemon are sent out at once instead of just one and special rules apply to each.
Pokemon Black and White looks fairly well for a Nintendo DS game and the graphics are upgraded from the previous Diamond and Pear editions. Music is fine and suits the game, with lots of appropriate sound effects when Pokemon are battling each other. Everything is 2D and sprite based, nodding back to an older era of RPG games, but they're well made sprites and animations are fairly believable.
Pokemon has become a household name, having survived decades of popular culture changes and still seeming to find a handhold in the the lives of youth and adults alike. The franchise is centered around trainers that travel the game world in search of Pokemon ( pocket monsters ). Catching, training and fighting these diverse beasties is the bulk of the game, as each Pokemon as a number of abilities that will aid the player in either exploring the map or fighting other Pokeman. Trainers never fight directly, but have their Pokeman fight for them. The Black and White editions of the game were released in 2011, each containing a slightly different list of available Pokeman to catch and win, encouraging players to trade between editions to 'catch them all.'
