Clarence (Keegan-Michael Key) is a conservative suburbanite with a wife and child. His cousin, Rell (Jordan Peele), is a bong-smoking slacker. Then one day Rell finds a kitten on his doorstep and immediately takes it in. He names the kitten Keanu. A few weeks later, in a case of mistaken identity, members of the Blips drug gang break into his house, ransack it and take Keanu. Rell and Clarence set off into Blips territory to recover Keanu.
Rell's life is changed forever when a cute kitten comes to his door, and he names it Keanu. Unfortunately, one weekend later, Keanu is abducted by persons unknown. Now Rell and his cousin, Clarence, are men on a mission to find Keanu against the odds. Unfortunately, those odds prove to be perilously high as they find Keanu in the care of the ruthless gangster, Cheddar, and he will only part with him for a price. Now for that cute kitten, these two middle class bumblers find themselves neck deep in a dangerous alien world of drugs and gang violence with only their desperate audacity, creativity and sheer dumb luck giving them a chance to survive.
Television talent has generally not had too much success transferring to the big screen, especially sketch comedy. "Saturday Night Live" and its many film adaptations of famous sketches have flopped more than thrived. But Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele don't lean on their "Key and Peele" success with "Keanu," but instead channel their brand of humor toward something completely original.

"Keanu" doesn't reach new heights for feature films made by TV comedians, or for comedy, but Key and Peele stay true to themselves, find a premise that includes some sharp satire and don't take the whole production too seriously. In other words, there's enough to enjoy — more than the average comedy.

Key and Peele are smart guys. They aren't the kind of comics/comic actors who will throw anything and everything at the audience and hope that it sticks. Peele, with "Key and Peele" writer Alex Rubens, have put a measure of thought into the script, including the jokes. Key and Peele don't seem unhinged or scraping for laughs. They understand that the humor comes from the conceit of two guys who are not stereotypically black having to pose as gang-bangers.

The two star as Rell (Peele) and Clarence (Key), two friends in classically different places in life — Rell a pot-smoking artist whose girlfriend just dumped him and Clarence a high- strung family man with a deep love of George Michael. When Keanu — the kitten Rell recently found on his doorstep — appears to have been stolen, the two get themselves in deep with drug dealer/gang boss Cheddar (Method Man) and the Blips. Cheddar does have Keanu, but to get him back, they must pretend to be two notorious thugs and killers, the Allentown Brothers.

"Keanu" is at its best when Rell and Clarence are "under cover." By virtue of their being black, this "disguise in plain sight" keeps a race commentary gently running beneath the entirety of this section of the film. These two men, who couldn't be further from violent killers, get away with their ploy to rescue Keanu simply because of the color of their skin and by speaking with a dialect.

This conceit is stronger than any other aspect of the film, namely the plot, so that's where "Keanu" falters. After a certain point, it becomes apparent that there's no meaningful or interesting direction for this to go except to spiral into ludicrousness. But because Rell and Clarence are multi-dimensional, it doesn't completely fall apart.

Key and Peele might not be quite to the point that there style can transcend platforms; the cleverness of "Keanu" doesn't necessarily merit a feature film. But there's plenty of reason to believe that under the right circumstances, they can make a comedy with huge appeal that will speak to comedy-lovers of both simple and more complicated tastes.

Once we finished the movie the very first thing she said was "boring" and sadly I have to agree with her. If I had not read in the film synopsis that the main character had just suffered a breakup with his girlfriend, it would have been easy to miss. That part was very much rushed and not well developed. And that is how the rest of the movie went. It was like a series of skits strung together most of which were not very well developed and only loosely tied together. I really wanted to like this movie ... which for me made it tolerable. It was a bit humorous at times, but no real LOL moments ... simply a few chuckles once in awhile. The best part of the movie was the cat and they did do a few creative things with the cat, but other than that this is not a movie I would ever watch again or recommend to a friend.
Wildly entertaining in parts, Keanu overstays its welcome and just keeps going, showing the growing pains of sketch comedy drawn out to epic proportions.
No, Keanu the cat is not harmed at any point in the movie, even when humans are getting hurt or killed around him.
