Two brothers lose their mother to an incurable disease. With the power of "alchemy", they use taboo knowledge to resurrect her. The process fails, and as a toll for using this type of alchemy, the older brother, Edward Elric loses his left leg while the younger brother, Alphonse Elric loses his entire body. To save his brother, Edward sacrifices his right arm and is able to affix his brother's soul to a suit of armor. With the help of a family friend, Edward receives metal limbs - "automail" - to replace his lost ones. With that, Edward vows to search for the Philosopher's Stone to return the brothers to their original bodies, even if it means becoming a "State Alchemist", one who uses his/her alchemy for the military.
Abandoned by their father as kids, two young brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric lived with their mother in a small town called Resembool. After losing their mother to a terminal illness, they try to resurrect her using alchemy - a science which allows you to transform physical matter from one form to another. However human transmutation is strictly forbidden as it cannot be carried out successfully. The resurrection of their mother failed causing Edward to lose his left leg and Alphonse his entire body. Edward manages to save Alphonse's soul by bonding it to a suit of armor by sacrificing his right arm. Determined to recover their bodies, Edward joins the military as a state alchemist and the brothers begin their search for the philosopher's stone. During their journey they discover the truth about the country's history, and the conspiracy at the higher levels of the military and take it upon themselves to save the country's future.
I would rate this TV series as easily one of the best ever made. Period. Character development is unsurpassed and rivaled by few. Given the size of the series, clocking at 64 episodes, it's a great achievement. The artistic quality is also way above average with very good animation and moderate level of detail.

This series is also more entertaining and easier to understand than other masterpieces of serial animation (such as Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Serial Experiments Lain and Haibane Renmei), hence I recommend this series to a wider spectrum than the specialists in Japanese animation. A must watch for everybody. There just MIGHT be no #Anime better than this so far (Except DBZ and Death Note) to provide satisfaction on the same level as this show did.

A show that transcends all norms of story-telling to deliver a story with utmost thrill and of utmost class. Convoluting with aspects of emotions, visual artistry and narrative to leave an ever-lasting impact on the viewer that MIGHT never be satisfied with another anime.

The animation is sharp, crisp and vivid, as well as it is very unique, corresponding to the theme of the story itself. The #Animation is definitely one of the most amazing things about this show and it all comes into focus in the last 10 episodes, where every detail just intensifies the #Climax.

The show definitely has adult content in it, in terms of the story and the plot, but it does not shy away from humor and light- heartedness from time to time. The storyline is very well written, as it flows with ease, while offering up all twists and turns.

One small thing that just doesn't work well with the show are the different Opening and Ending themes that have been used. Just 2 of the opening themes (Again Yui and Rain Sid) and 1 Ending theme (Let It All Out) complement the show, the rest are just annoying.
No, this has no relation with the movie or the previous tv series at all. This series follows more closely to the original manga than it's predecessor, though there are still some cuts from the original source material throughout the series. Several characters from the original manga that were left out of the previous series are used for this series, just as how there are numerous characters from the previous series that are exclusive to that series and are not used here (along with a few minor manga characters that were used in the first series but not here). Also while episodes 2-14 use similar material to the previous series, there are notably a few plot changes as it reflects based on what occurred in the manga and not the previous series. Episode 15 would officially start with the material from the manga that was never used before.
