Compiling the rtl8192cu Driver.
Evan Hanau July 30, 2012.
Setup.
To get started compiling the Realtek 8192cu wifi module on the Beaglebone, please follow the directions for setting up a cross-compilation environment for the Beaglebone. Once you have set up your cross-compilation environment, proceed with the instructions below. This guide assumes that the user is currently running the Angstrom demo image on the Beaglebone.
Source Code and Makefile.
As of the time of this writing, the current source code was located at the Realtek website. Download and extract the zipfile for the Realtek 8192cu chipset. Inside the "driver" folder is a tarball called rtl8188C_8192C_usb_linux_v3.4.3_4369.20120622.tar.gz (note that future versions may be named differently). Move the tarball into your home directory on the machine where cross-compilation will take place.
Un-tar the driver source by running:
Go into the rtl8188C_8192C_usb_linux_v3.x.x_xxxx_xxxxxxxx folder (where the xx's represent the driver source code's version and date) and move this Beaglebone-specific Makefile into the folder. Then run:
Go into the Makefile using vi or another text editor and do the following:
Scroll to the line that starts with "ifeq($(CONFIG_PLATFORM_ARM_BEAGLEBONE), y)" and edit below this line: Ensure that the $PATH variable includes the location of the toolchain that you will be using to cross-compile the module. Refer to the setup instructions for the location of this directory. Set the KSRC environment variable is set to the location of your Beaglebone's kernel source (see cross-compilation environment setup instructions for this directory path). Set the KVER environment variable to your beaglebone's kernel version (at the time of this writing, 3.2.18 was in use).
Compiling the Module.
Run the Makefile by typing "make".
If all goes well, you will have a newly-compiled module called 8192cu.ko. Verify that it compiled for the ARM processor by running "file 8192.ko". It should produce output similar to the following:
Module Installation on the Beaglebone.
Move the 8192cu.ko file into your home directory on the Beaglebone, then run the following commands:
To test the module installation, run:
The 8192cu driver should now be present in the list of installed modules.
