Love Wedding Repeat is a 2020 romantic comedy film written and directed by Dean Craig, in his feature directorial debut. [1] A remake of the 2012 French romantic comedy film Plan de Table, [1] the film stars Sam Claflin, Olivia Munn and Eleanor Tomlinson. It was released on 10 April 2020 by Netflix.
Plot [ edit]
While in Rome visiting his sister Hayley, Jack is trying to muster up the courage to kiss Dina, Hayley's American roommate, before returning home to London. However, they are interrupted by Greg, Jack's dorm roommate from university, who offers Jack a ride to the airport. Saying an awkward goodbye, both men leave with Jack upset.
Three years later, Jack is at Hayley's wedding. Bryan, an aspiring actor and the maid of honour, is more concerned about getting introduced to Italian film director Vitelli than helping out the bride. Hayley has chosen to not seat Bryan with Vitelli, as she has seated all the English people on the English table, which also includes Amanda, Jack's "nightmare of an ex-girlfriend". Amanda has come to the wedding with her boyfriend Chaz, with whom she has clear commitment issues (he proposed six months earlier and she has not responded yet). Other friends of Hayley's include clingy Rebecca and socially inept Sidney.
Since their parents are dead, Hayley has asked Jack to walk her down the aisle. Just as they are about to, Hayley informs Jack that Dina has come to the wedding and is newly single. After the ceremony, Jack sees Dina for the first time in three years. The two confess to one another that they used to ask Hayley about the other.
Marc, Hayley's former school classmate, arrives uninvited at the wedding venue high on cocaine and plans to ruin the wedding. Hayley confronts Marc and asks him to leave. They are interrupted by Roberto, Hayley's husband, who invites Marc to stay for the celebrations. Hayley asks Jack to drug Marc with her sleeping drops and he reluctantly agrees. Shortly after Jack puts the drops into Marc's empty champagne glass, a group of children mess around and rearrange the seating order. The narrator comments on the many variations a table of eight can be seated.
After the rearrangement, Bryan is now seated with the drugged champagne glass and quickly drinks it all. Jack arrives at the table and attempts to switch glasses, unaware that Bryan had already ingested the drops. Marc tells Hayley that he will tell Roberto they slept together three weeks earlier, if she does not tell him first. Hayley once again asks Jack to deal with him, so Jack and Sidney attempt to lock Marc in a closet. In the meantime, Jack and Dina reconnect, Chaz discovers that Jack and Amanda's connection was just great sex and feels threatened, and Bryan attempts to deliver his maid-of-honour speech but just mumbles through it and than destroys the cake.
Marc is released from the closet by a guest who hears his yelling. He goes up to the microphone and tells everyone about that he and Hayley had slept together recently. Roberto is upset, and after going out onto a balcony, has an argument with Hayley about their marriage being over, when he stumbles and falls to his death.
The scene is frozen with Roberto tumbling over the balcony and the narrator reminds the audience of how the different variations of seats at the table can affect the wedding. In fast-forward, we see a number of those variations with different people being drugged each time, all ending in chaos and disaster.
In the last variation, in real time, Jack is sat beside Dina but is also the one that ends up drugged. He attempts to throw it up, but is unable to. Bryan comes to the washroom and attempts to help, but Dina walks in on Jack on his knees with Bryan's fingers down his throat. They try to move past it back at the table, but as Dina tearfully opens up about the effect her mother's death had on her, Jack is struggling to stay awake which upsets her.
While everything is going awry for Jack, the other guests make out much better in this variation. After Jack advises Sidney to work on listening to women better, Sidney makes a love connection with an Italian guest who is as awkward as he is. Bryan realises that Rebecca likes him for himself, not who he pretends to be, and they hook up and become a couple. His maid-of-honour speech is a success and impresses Vitelli. Chaz and Amanda realize through the speech that they are not together for the right reasons and part amicably. After a heart-to-heart with Hayley about always being there for each other, Jack manages to convince Marc to keep the hook-up a secret so that Hayley and Roberto can be happy together.
As Dina is leaving the wedding due to a work emergency, Jack attempts to connect with her for the last time, but she says that while there was a connection, it just came down to bad timing and she leaves. Jack and Bryan chat at the bar and the conversation inspires Jack not to give up and put himself first. He takes off and races after Dina, catching her at the end of the street attempting to get a car. Just as he is about to kiss her, a random man comes up and tries to say how he knows Dina. Jack tells him to go away and they finally kiss.
During the credits, other variations and hijinks are shown.

Movies | ‘Love Wedding Repeat’ Review: A Tumble Down the Aisle Movie Review A couple’s reception becomes a disaster (or does it? ) in this comedy of multiple errors. Credit... Riccardo Ghilardi/Netflix Love. Wedding. Repeat Directed by Dean Craig Comedy 1h 40m Pass the champagne — out of reach of the ill-fated newlyweds Hayley (Eleanor Tomlinson) and Roberto (Tiziano Caputo) in the comedy “Love Wedding Repeat, ” streaming on Netflix. The couple’s reception at an Italian villa becomes a drunken, disastrous lab experiment carried out by an unseen oracle (Penny Ryder) who wants to prove that happily-ever-after is merely a game of chance. Table four is where the bride (a charming redhead with a wide smile that shifts from phony to petrified) has quarantined her English-speaking friends: one shiftless male maid-of-honor, two vengeful exes and three lovelorn fools. One of those includes Hayley’s brother Jack (Sam Claflin), haplessly mooning over his dream girl (Olivia Munn), an American war journalist who gets a few muttered zingers, but is otherwise stuck acting, well, dreamy. This volatile cocktail is given one more ingredient — a glass of bubbly spiked with tranquilizers — and a twist. Devilish children have randomly rearranged the seating cards so the poisoner, Jack, isn’t sure who has the sleeping potion until they’ve passed out on their plate. Naturally, the nuptials climax in blood and tears. Unnaturally, however, the film rewinds to test whether the evening might improve if a different guzzler became the Sleeping Bungler. It’s a clever conceit based on the 2012 French film “Plan de Table, ” here reduced to a hasty montage of possibilities and one other story line played out in full, accompanied by a stately classical score to balance the mayhem. With a few more slammed doors, the action-packed script could be a passable British farce. Alas, the director and screenwriter Dean Craig instead favors British chagrin plus an overdose of noblesse disdain, which is well-executed by the groom’s silent, suffering grandmother (Giusi Merli). Freida Pinto, however, playing Jack’s loathsome ex, appears to have been instructed to recoil until her head is a foot behind her shoulders. Craig’s comic delivery belabors gags that should run light on their feet. Rather than serving up a variety of zingers, the movie settles for one joke per character, repeated endlessly. A case in point: the jealous boyfriend (Allan Mustafa) who’s fixated on that male measurement. Instead, the best bits of comedy come from physical slapstick. Jack Farthing, playing a coked-out schoolyard crush hellbent on sabotaging Hayley’s marriage, stumbles into the movie like a marionette missing most of his strings, while Joel Fry, as her wastrel best friend, is somehow able to suck his eyeballs into his skull. Cheers to that. Love Wedding Repeat Not rated. Running time: 1 hour 40 minutes.

Deserving of a quick-fire divorce, Love. Wedding. Repeat is an entirely joyless affair, wasting a guest list of impressive actors with excruciating dialogue and sub-par levels of farce
May 7, 2020
Absolutely terrible unfunny Netflix romantic comedy
April 23, 2020
As a filmmaker with promising comic chops but one too many Richard Curtis DVDs, the clearly talented but heavily derivative Craig may need to borrow less from his predecessors and take a chance...
April 21, 2020
This broad, not-very-funny farce only has one original idea in its head - to restart a film that wasn't working - and it doesn't exploit it to its full potential. What a disappointment.
You hope for a version of Love, Actually or Four Weddings and a Funeral from this British comedy. However, you get mush.
April 20, 2020
Although Love Wedding Repeat's committed cast find haphazard humour in their character's plight, they are hampered by a torpid storyline and a string of threadbare gags.
I feel as if this movie was a missed opportunity, one that could have been executed better. It's a good effort but at the end of the day it just didn't come together.
April 18, 2020
"Love. Repeat" isn't quite "Four Weddings and a Funeral, " but it scratches that same itch, serving up a comforting cocktail of wacky and sometimes realistically raunchy adult humor with heart.
April 17, 2020
It's perfectly possible to have a very good time watching Love Wedding Repeat even if you know exactly where it's going from the very first shot to the last.
Sam Claflin's comedic turn is welcoming and hilarious in this modern wedding romance story.
Love Wedding Repeat tries very hard to bring the comedy and the chemistry, but fails to give us either one.
With a dull and tragically boring script, Love Wedding Repeat is a predictable, trope-filled romance film executed poorly.
April 16, 2020
Over-plotted farce lands flat; swearing, sexual jokes, drugs
Scintillating dialogue such as "Life's random, innit? " is indicative of the film, which is worryingly reliant on the supposed inherent hilarity of two straight men accidentally kissing.
Love Wedding Repeat is not always laugh-out-loud funny. But it has its moments and you're intrigued enough to see how all plays out.
April 15, 2020
Unfortunately, most of the characters just aren't funny enough to captivate, often annoying or just too broad to be believable, like rejects from one of Richard Curtis' more recent comedies.
Love Wedding Repeat is what I would call the ideal Netflix movie. It is a lighthearted comedic romp that kept me thoroughly entertained from beginning to end.
April 14, 2020
Love Wedding Repeat is not as confusing as it is purely lazy, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have its small pleasures.
Starts off well enough, but never manages to recover from a shaky midpoint that should have got ditched at another table.

Same tire plot, the bride either cheats on the groom or breaks his heart. It seems like 90% of all wedding movies uses this plot device, so there's nothing new here. There's hardly anything romantic about this movie and if there is, it'sforced. It could have been so much better if it had tried to be more original instead of using a bunch clichés. I n Netflix’s dogged effort to bring back and maintain the romantic comedy, one can certainly critique the quality of its output, but it’s hard to fault the platform’s commitment to the cause, providing a near-constant stream of meet-cutes that have still yet to return to the big screen. The genre’s continued absence elsewhere has meant that some of the streamer’s lesser efforts have garnered celebratory reviews that seem less focused on the details of the film in question and more on its very existence but with their latest, the British-Italian farce Love Wedding Repeat, it’s hard to imagine even the thirstiest romcom lover praising its subdued online launch.
It’s a remake of the 2012 French comedy Plan de Table, throwing us into a familiar situation – a fraught wedding – and then adding a fantastical gimmick. The film starts out with a near-miss between Jack (Sam Claflin) and Dina (Olivia Munn), a goodbye that should have ended with a kiss, but fate had other ideas, and three years later they meet again at the Italian wedding of Jack’s sister Hayley (Eleanor Tomlinson). As a Judi Dench-sounding narrator tells us, romance can be affected by the slightest of deviation within our daily lives and at a wedding, if place settings were to be moved around, the course of true love could go from running smoothly to not running at all.
And so writer-director Dean Craig plays musical chairs with “the English table” – Jack, Dina, Jack’s “nightmare ex” Amanda (Freida Pinto) and her insecure new boyfriend Chaz (Allan Mustafa), boring kilt-wearing non-Scot Sidney (Tim Key), intense Rebecca (Aisling Bea), wannabe actor and “man” of honour Bryan (Joel Fry) and Marc (Jack Farthing), an uninvited coked-up former fling of the bride who threatens to ruin the whole day. We see their chaotic escapades play out before then rewinding to see what could also have happened if they’d been seated differently. Hilarity should ensue either way except that it doesn’t, replaced with the odd smirk along the way instead.
As with the majority of Craig’s previous scripts, from Caffeine to Death at a Funeral to A Few Best Men, the stage is set for all-out ensemble farce yet his moving parts of choice, including sedatives, dick jokes and a secret tryst, aren’t really inventive enough to propel the film into the quippy, fast-paced comedy it so desperately wants to be. There have been a great many romcoms that have managed to find new ways to squeeze rom and com out of the most obvious setting of all but Love Wedding Repeat isn’t one of them, its hackneyed backdrop instead serving as a blunt reminder of the better films that came before it. The reality-shifting device at its centre is also sloppily used with the film offering up one version of events, a montage of others and then another extended set of circumstances. A slicker film could have found a better way to use this twist, in both the script and the direction but things are mostly flat all round, a glass of champagne that’s lost its fizz.
Given the sheer amount flung at the wall, there are some things that briefly stick and its mostly down to some choice comedian casting. Key’s specific line delivery is as amusing as it ever has been and he manages to find something of a groove with his one-note character and similarly Bea, whose star continues to ascend after last year’s darkly funny Channel 4 and Hulu series This Way Up, tries her best with limited material (although oddly her funniest scenes arrive during the end credits). But at the opposite end, an incredibly wooden Pinto is disastrously miscast as the venomous ex while Claflin and Munn’s chemistry fizzles out fast.
The film’s drunken lurch into earnest romance near the end, after leaning on bawdy humour for the most part, requires us to see these characters as something other than farcical chess pieces, an uphill battle for all involved. The frequent use of Claire de Lune, a glorious piece of music that would make footage of an Amazon warehouse seem emotional, becomes a lazy crutch, forcing us to feel something that just isn’t there. A repeat viewing of an older romantic comedy would make for a better night in.
Love Wedding Repeat is now available on Netflix.
