New resource system
On Io, production works a little differently. There are plenty of new sources of power, but some of your basic human needs - like water - simply don’t exist. This means that the priorities for what you build and harvest on Io are vastly different from Mars or Ceres. New resources like basalt exist only on Io and will allow you to build new structures and adapt to the lack of other materials.
New Faction -The Penrose Collective
Highly adaptable and influential, the Penrose Collective intends to thrive on the harsh environment of Io. With the ability to found 2 headquarters at the start of the game (and upgrade them simultaneously), they are able to spread their operations across an already depleted environment in order to afford them easier access to more resources. Their claim swapping ability also allows them to trade in useless plots of land at any time during the game in order to claim something else that will help their cause. Because of the versatility, they are also able to use silicon instead of steel for construction.
New Faction - The Diadem Trust
An elite business group with grand visions, the Diadem Trust is ready to crush any other corporation that gets in its way. All of their advanced buildings - Hacker Arrays, Patent Labs, Pleasure Domes, Optimization centers - are top of the line and can push out just a little bit more than their competition. Hacker Arrays can create shortages and surpluses at the same time, Pleasure Domes produce double the revenue, optimization centers grant a bonus claim, and the patent race means absolutely nothing to them - they can purchase a patent at any time, regardless of whether or not another player already controls it. It’s all legal, they assure you - their lawyers challenge you to read the fine print.
New Infinite Map Challenge
Compete against the rest of the community in this unique challenge. Each map evolves, becoming more difficult than the last - can you find your way onto the leaderboards for each one? Push yourself past the competition and see how many maps you can conquer before the harsh environments of space get the better of you.

The two new factions, Elite and Nomad, add some really interesting new mechanisms to OTC. I've spent dozens of hours already on the updated tutorials and addtional campaign elements, this adds quite a bit of fresh challenges to the single player game. On the multiplayer side, the expansion has shaken things up quite a bit and it's a lot of fun watching the meta evolve daily as people try to figure out with to do with the new Io maps and factions. I've purchased a few copies of the DLC for friends, that's how much I love it. Grab it now!. Great expansion! For pure single player, you can navigate a campaign on Io, one of Jupiter's Moons, with its harsh environment and uniquely different resource dynamics than Mars (plus Space Elevators!). There's also a competitive single-player mode, the Infinite Map Challenge, which provides an unlimited amount of progressive challenges, with a leaderboard both for the most number of maps completed and for the fastest win on each individual map. Basically, the Infinite Map Challenge lets you compete with other players, but do so at a more relaxed pace than in multiplayer.
For multiplayer, if you own Jupiter's Forge, you can create lobby games on Io, and friends without the expansion can join you and play. Also, owning Jupiter's Forge will allow you to practice the awesome new HQs--the Nomads and the Elites--in skirmishes so that you are prepared to utilize them on the multiplayer ladder.
. Jupiter's Forge is an exciting addition to OWTC. Their official description is very accurate in that it provides a lot of new challenges that you didn't face on Mars or Ceres. The Basalt lakes and new buildings for water and fuel changes how you play compared to the other two planets.
However, the BEST part is that only the host requires the DLC for everyone to have in on the fun.. A brilliant game that has the player work against other companies to gain dominance over the Solar System.. Great addition to the game. Totally worth the money! I'm happy to support indy devs that create a great and unique game.. After playing several games with my dad and brother, I must say that this expansion definitely adds an interesting twist to the game. On a planet where you must make your own water as well as unrely on permanent resource mines, this expansion will definitely make you more cautious of creating careless moves. It'll also show you why humans shouldn't even consider settling on Io.
And yes, only the host of a multiplayer game needs the expansion in order to play it.
