Resin-bound systems incorporating 10 mm dried aggregates and larger sizes are generally used as tree surrounds known as tree pits. These are a cost-effective and practical alternative to metal tree grilles that are stolen for scrap value, are costly to purchase and harbour litter thus increasing maintenance costs for local authorities and tax payers. Tree pit systems work in a similar way to resin-bound surfacing systems only using larger aggregates to allow more water to permeate through to feed the trees they surround. The system is mixed on site and cold applied, using a high-quality clear resin binder to coat the aggregate particles prior to laying.

As a result, a resin-bound surface is more durable and requires less maintenance – it needs to be swept or power washed at least twice a year, to avoid the buildup of detritus and prevent the growth of moss or algae. In summary,a resin bound system delivers apermeable, durable, accessible, multi-layer surface. Resin bonded gravelis where the chosen aggregate is scattered and bonded onto a resin base, providing a textured appearance of loose stones. The resin bonded system will have some initial shedding of aggregate and needs to be swept and maintained, ensuring that loose aggregate is removed. Despite being a small proportion of the overall costs the selection of aggregates used in bound surfacing is essential. Dusty aggregates, damp aggregates and oversized aggregates are often used to in an effort to reduce system costs. Star uretech only promote the use of specialist decorative aggregates such as those supplied by long rake spar.

Simply installing a resin bound surface onto concrete or asphalt does not provide a suds compliant surface. Grs recently launched a resin-bound aggregates kit ideal for creating stunning durable finishes for drives, paths and patios. Available in a range of colours, there’s bound to be a perfect match for your garden or landscaping project.

Download the base build up spec to get typical specifications for roads, car parks, roof decks, driveways and pathways on a variety of substrates including asphalt, concrete and cellular paving. Specialist 3-part resin system blended with select, washed and dried aggregates. A smooth trowel finish encapsulates the material producing a beautiful natural surface. Perfectly meets current demands for sustainable drainage whilst ensuring a stunning non-slip surface that is great with aggregates that don’t show up discolouration – the perfect harmony in any environment. Depending on the intended purpose for the surface, the top Resin Bound Driveways layer depth can be adjusted, meaning each pack can cover a different surface area depending on the thickness. For an approximate guideline on the required thickness, please see the table “spreading rates”. Once the perimeter edging has been installed properly and securely, then a base layer of mot type 3 should be laid at the required depth.

The minimum recommended depth of hardcore should be 150mm but this depends on a number of factors including sub-grade stability and intended use for the surface. The first step towards creating a beautifully finished resin bound surface would be to remove any existing block-paving, concrete or tarmac surface. The importance of properly preparing the base and choosing the right weather conditions are absolutely paramount to the success of installing resin bound gravel. By following some simple guidance as set out below, you can help to negate these potentially massively damaging issues during the installation process. There is no hard and fast, guaranteed way to calculate the precise amount of materials needed. The approximation for coverage of our standard resin bound gravel kits is around 3.55m² when laid at 18mm. Deviations in the surface texture and porosity can affect this figure and we recommend a 10% over-order to help protect against surface fluctuations.
