The noises sold it for me, character's talking like they're key-smashing? It's such a pleasing noises to hear them talk.. Charming and delightful, a short little game well worth your time.. Spoiler Warning in Effect

Smile for Me is strange. It's a straight "Find the String to Pull" adventure game that plays like nothing so much as a monkey island game. The art style is wonderful, the setting is bizarre, and I like the idea of it all but...

You know, I kind of walk away just feeling a bit "Meh" about the whole experience.

It's good, You get a decent four hours of it, but the way the game flirts with being one of those Stealth Cartoony Horror Games with creepy VHS footage and a clearly deranged Narrator works against it way more than it helps. It feels like the "Stealth Horror" stuff was put in last minute as a marketing gimmick for an otherwise Psychonaughts level intensity (it's no coincidence, I feel, that both games feature a mad dentist as a primary antagonist), because at no point does the threatened darkness ever spring forth or coalesce into a scare or an oppressive atmosphere.

And I wouldn't go off on that, but like, it's definitely part of the marketing<\/i>, hell, it's probably why you're thinking of buying it. Because The Hex, Pony Island, Doki-Doki Literature Club, and the primogenerator Undertale kind of train you to look past the candy-coated art style in search of a creep show. There isn't on here, it's more candy with black licorice than strawberries and razor-blades, if you follow my meaning.

I hate giving it a thumbs down, because I feel that there IS a lot of good work here. But in the end the only really positive aspect I left with was the art style, and the rest of it doesn't have much to it.. Artstyle is kinda like Psychonauts, puzzles are like Dropsy, and the soundtrack is great. The game world is kinda shoddily designed but that kinda ties into the uncanny nature of the place, so that's kind of a plus too.. This is an incredible little adventure game with a bold, colorful art style, memorable characters, and unique gameplay! It only takes about four hours to 100%, including playing through both endings, but it never gets repetitive or boring during that time. The puzzles challenge you to explore the world and experiment with different ways to use items, and there was only one that really frustrated me (finding the toothbrush).

I especially love how this game handles its "horror" elements. There's definitely a darker side to the world, but it never goes full-on shock like other "deceptively cute" indie games. It feels thoughtful and genuine, and everything fits together nicely.

Also, big ups for CYELATM reference :-). After getting the best ending I can say that this is an amazing game, and well worth all the excitement I had leading up to it. The story is great, and the characters are so charming. The art is beautiful and the music will be in my mind forever.

I do wish characters had unique reactions to items, but I understand why they don't.

This game is well worth your time. Get all the endings. All I can really say beyond this is that if y'all make another game in this vain I'm THERE! ESPECIALLY if there's EVEN MORE SMOOCHIN'!. Smile For Me is a charming puzzle-adventure game with a fun art-style, creative puzzles, and an enjoyable cast of weird characters. Without spoiling too much, you wander around the Habitat trying to put a smile on everyone's face by solving their problems in different ways. You interact with others using the items you've gathered and the nodding mechanic. It's short (maybe 5 or 6 hours for a first play-through?), but worth the price.. i actually have some problems with the way this game's "good" ending implies that you can just 'fix' mental illness (and by extension people) by doing nice things for them, and how the "bad" ending implies that there's only one other way to 'deal' with folks w\/ mental illness. maybe the true anarchist ending pays some tribute to the actual complexity inherent and lack of easy answers inherent to this situation, maybe i'll go do that one sometime. i liked the rest of the game though! here's my favorite quote from the game

I wanted to make artichoke dip.So I tried to get ahold of an artichoke, which was more difficult than you'd think. I was at the Entire Foods grocery store, and after asking the butcher for the 4th time where the artichokes were, altercations occured, and security had to escort me out. I stubbed my toe on the automatic doors on the way out. That happened every time I tried to purchase an artichoke. Not the security guard part, just the toe stubbing. Somewhere, somehow, in any grocery mark, I go and stub my toe. It's never the same toe, either. Sometimes big. Sometimes pinky. Sometimes that middle-left toe gets stubbed too. My feet hurt all the time. My doctor says it's because I have scoliosis but I say you know what. It's because I'm constantly stubbing my toes at grocery stores.
I still want to make artichoke dip.
