The new addition to Sony’s mirrorless camera system, the news lens FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM, will be one of the hottest products coming out in the recent future. The lens is a pro-certified zoom with squarely ultra-wide coverage. The USP of the lens is that it is the only lens with F2.8 aperture. It captures the same mesmerizing pictures that the FE 12-24mm F4 G is capable of plus it also gathers double the light, and as per the tech giant, offers more efficient optics to boot.

The lens finds itself accurately in the premium G Master line, Sony’s elite category of lenses. The makers have been raving over their product for its edge-to-edge resolution that also features minimal distortion and a durable build. Photographers, especially landscape enthusiasts, are always on the look-out for the next best Wide-angle lens, and Sony has provided them with just that. You can use it in all weather conditions, comes with fluorine protection so that the significant front element keeps free of debris and smudges.

The predecessor, FE 12-24mm F4 G weighed 1.2 pounds and was 4.6 by 3.5 inches, while the new entrant is heavier and bigger, considering in at 1.9 pounds and 5.4 inches by 3.8 inches. The shipped product includes a soft case, standard rear cap, slip-on lens cap, and a template to size filter gels appropriately.

The optical elements used, place the lens head and shoulders above the rest
The makers have used exotic, unconventional optical elements to capture extensive, bright, and sharp coverage. At the front, is the Extreme Aspheric (XA), which swells out much more than previous ultra-wide lenses did. It has been protected by a special anti-glare coating, called Nano AR Coating II since the existing materials used did not work on such curved surfaces.

The field of focus is flattened by XA elements. While the super ED Glass reduces the chromatic abrasion that usually causes fringe-like effects. It has a complicated autofocus system, which uses four motors that work in a linear motion to run two floating focus elements. This assures immediate yet subtle responses.

Threaded filters aren’t supported due to the curvature of the front element. A piece of welcome news for landscape photographers and videographers wanting a 24fps cinematic look, the end of the optical path, is embedded with a hold. This enables you to use optical gel neutral density filters.

Its manual focus has a linear response. Videographers can now recreate focus racks, without worrying. It does not feature Optical Stabilization although the full-frame camera series by Sony does include in-body stabilization.
