About This Game

Boasting stunningly detailed pixel art, and featuring a twisting story of mystery and suspense, Tales of the Neon Sea is an exciting new adventure from Chinese indie studio Palm Pioneer. Set in a fully realized cyberpunk cityscape, use your wits and puzzle-solving skills to determine the course of this unique tale.

This release contains about 12-15 hours of gameplay, and features the first three chapters of a larger story arc. We aim to release following chapters of the main storyline for free sometime in the autumn.

Story:
In the near future, humans and sentient AI robots rely on each other for survival despite growing tensions and unease. Our protagonist, formerly a veteran police detective but now retired following years of frustration and disillusionment, spends his days intoxicated while accepting random jobs as a private investigator to make ends meet. He exists within the neon sea of an immense city, its blinding artificial lights unable to hide the shadow of greed and lust that threatens to engulf it at any moment.

This drunken cycle is broken when our hero becomes entangled in a murder case, one which holds the key to tracking down a monstrous killer who long ago escaped justice. Unlock your memories, decode the truth, and resist drowning in the wave of conspiracy that grips the city!

Features:
  • Fascinating Story
Investigate the murder scene, examine the evidence, and use your powers of deduction to solve the case piece by piece. Once the mist is cleared, will you see the truth or uncover an even bigger mystery?

  • Old School Pixel-art and Detailed Environmental Design
Explore an evocative cyberpunk world brought to life by incredibly detailed pixel-art. Immerse yourself in a vision of a future that can’t let go of the past.

  • Rich and Varied Puzzle Design
Puzzles that will challenge your sense of logic, observation and patience! Combining narrative and environmental elements, and designed to augment your journey into this weird and vibrant world.

  • Play as a Cat? Of Course!
Step into the shoes, or furry paws, of William! As small black street cat, William can reach areas that humans and robots simply cannot, and often finds himself in the right place at the right time!

Awesome pixel art. Cheap a** "ending", if you can even call it that.
Zero resolution. To anything.

Only get this game on a major sale if you feel like wasting a couple hours to conclude feeling disappointed af.. (ниже на русском) Usually I don't write reviews. But in this case: DON'T BUY IT at full price.

Game isn't awful. First hours of gameplay seem to be an authentic adventure/puzzle with nice plot and art. Cats are awesome. But then... Well, boring repetative puzzle sequences (damn pipes) begin to repeat, it almost seems like devs wanted to make game seem longer.

Puzzles are the same all the way. Story ends in the middle of the game (not like it comes to it's final, but devs just stop telling it). And the final isn't even a cliffhanger, it's a sorry excuse of it. Not a very big spoiler, it's about first 20 minutes of the game: After the prologue the whole game is main hero memory about how he ended up in this situation. A-a-a-and - surprise, you'll never knew, because the game ends in what seems midgame with "To be continued".

The game feels like a 4-hour demo, which was made longer with repeating same puzzles and adding some time-killing sequences. It's a shame, cause that 4 hours of great gameplay are good. And you can't use cashback - because boring stuff begins mid-game.

The translation gradually gets worse until the final area of the game which has untranslated Chinese text. i'd say it's 7/10. the reason it's a thumbs down is because it sorely lacks coherence and identity in its gameplay. yes, as many other reviews point out, it has a great variety of puzzles, but it results in neither of them being elevated to anything memorable. there are many puzzles that are just pure traditional puzzles (like hanoi towers, for instance), and many others are based on traditional mechanics. whenever the game tries to innovate, the main tool is to artificially slow the player's progress down. for instance, in the final area there's a dozen or two interactive places. you can only properly interact with them when they are lit up, and of course you can only have 2 or 3 of them lit up at once. you can switch the lights through a special console, but there's never a clever puzzle or resource management behind it, it's just there to add legwork and pad the playtime (also by increasing the chance of you missing an interactive spot). then you get a bunch of rechargers/accumulators/transformators/batteries that you have to sort your way through.
two of the game's supposedly signature investigation mechanics are complete chores. searching for clues involves nothing more than just combing the screen with the mouse, and the cogwheels "deduction" is simple combinatorics with no depth. those puzzles might as well have been randomly generated (and i wouldn't be surprised if that's the case). probably only 2 or 3 puzzles in the entire game are mildly interesting, but they are marred by very confusingly translated instructions. translation quality is a consistent problem throughout the whole game (it even ends with "to be continue"). in the last chapter some phrases are not translated at all (luckily, none of those seemed to be crucial).
somehow, even the UI is very clunky and unresponsive. from going through your notes to interacting with puzzles, everything feels off. many puzzle screens even have a confirmation popup window on exit, which became almost infuriating towards the end..
