What Are The Uses Of Running Rigging?

Rigging is a very important part of a sailing vessel. It comprises the whole system of cables, wires, and chains, which support the sailing ship and its masts. It chiefly includes standing rigging and running rigging. Both have different roles in keeping the sailing vessel smoothly running on the surface of the water.

The standing rigging keeps the mast in place and supports it by reinforcing the spars against the wind load that is transferred from the sails on the boat. On the other hand, running rigging is the major rigging system that is used for raising, lowering, shaping, and controlling the sails on a sailing vessel. It actually handles all the operations aboard the boat under the sail.

Here are some of the most common uses of running rigging.

Supports the Sails- Halyards (A rope that is used to hoist ladder, sail, and flags) is a part of running rigging. It supports the sails on the boat to optimize its performance against the wind.

Shapes the Sails- Running rigging also shapes the sails and keeps it optimally functioning during the travel. This also helps to face the strong winds bravely.

Adjust the Angle to the Wind- Guys, preventers, and sheets (a part of running rigging) are three major elements that help in rightly adjusting the angles of the sails to the wind.

Stabilize the Sails- Marine winds are very strong and can destroy the sails. This is why it is important to have stability in sails. This job is done by Trapeze wire that is an integral part of running rigging.
