What is glucose decompensation, the condition from which the footballer Diana González tragically died

The night of this Friday, the Club América reported on the death of Diana Victoria González Barrera, a female soccer player, the cause of her death was a decompensation of glucose, caused by the diabetes she suffered from.

And it is that in Mexico it is a relatively common and fatal disease. 14% of adults in Mexico have diabetes. This is the main cause of death in the country. It is estimated that there could be 80,000 deaths per year. While 29% of the population is unaware that they have diabetes, according to the National Institute of Public Health.

Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose (sugar) levels are high (from 126 mg / dl); Glucose comes from the foods you eat. In type 1 diabetes, the body does not make insulin; in type 2, the most common type, the body does not make enough or use insulin properly.

Although diabetes mellitus is a disease that is associated with unhealthy lifestyles (obesity and / or overweight; sedentary life and a diet rich in sugars and fats), there is also a predisposition for genetic factors (parents or siblings with the disease).

Type 1 diabetes mellitus, in which there is a total destruction (greater than 90%) of the β cells, leading to an absolute deficiency of insulin. Represents between 5 to 10% of DM.

The type 2 diabetes mellitus, generated as a result of a progressive defect in insulin secretion, an increased peripheral resistance to it and increased glucose production. Represents between 90 to 95% of DM.

It is estimated that 70% of people with prediabetes will progress to diabetes, that is, seven out of 10 who were diagnosed with this condition will develop the disease.

Health sector agencies have warned that many of these deaths, in addition to being premature, are preceded by a long period of severe and costly disability. Diabetes is the leading cause of preventable blindness in the adult of productive age, the leading cause of end-stage renal failure, the leading cause of non-traumatic amputations, and the leading cause of myocardial infarction.

In addition, up to 14% of adults in the nation have a pre-diabetic state which is defined by glucose levels between 100 and 125 mg / dl. This situation is silent, people do not feel that they have glucose at those levels and therefore do not know it.

The researcher of the National Institute of Public Health (INSP), Dr. Clicerio González Villalpando, considers that "in the world it is estimated that there are 415 million diabetics and this means that one in 11 subjects has diabetes".

In addition, he added, one in seven children are born to mothers with gestational diabetes (diabetes that occurs during pregnancy) or diabetes that exists before gestation and that coexists with pregnancy. "It is something profoundly serious," she said. Especially since they affect vulnerable populations and they are all preventable. "It is very important that we have this very clear message for women," said González Villalpando.

Women who have diabetes and plan to become pregnant should control this disease optimally before starting the pregnancy. If they do not, they have a great risk, which can affect the product of pregnancy and the mother herself. It is very important for women to know that this can be avoided.
