As described above, wide area networks are a form of telecommunication networks that can connect devices from different locations and around the world. WANs are the largest and most extensive computer networks available today.

These networks are often created by service providers who then lease their WANs to businesses, schools, governments, or ordinary users. Access can be provided over a variety of channels such as virtual private networks (VPNs) or wireless lines, cellular networks, or Internet access.

Employees from anywhere can use the WAN to exchange data, communicate with colleagues, or simply stay connected to a large data resource center for the organization. Certified Networking Professionals help organizations maintain their internal WAN as well as other critical IT infrastructure and maintain cybersecurity .
