For millions of PC users worldwide, the manufacturer's support for its operating system will end on January 14, 2020, as Microsoft will no longer support all versions of Windows 7 at this time.
This means that millions of Windows 7 users no longer receive patches, bug fixes or security updates from the manufacturer.

For companies and organizations that still run a significant number of Windows 7, this represents a significant investment. What are the alternatives?

Do not do anything
If the devices crash or fail, many will replace their devices with Windows 7 with newer hardware in which Windows 10 Pro Oem can be preinstalled. Meanwhile, however, the remaining installations of Windows 7 must have third-party protections, such as client-based security software.

System administrators may consider separating Windows 7 devices from the network, possibly in a dedicated subnet or VLAN, to at least partially isolate an identifiable security issue. However, with the best will in the world, the company's risk profile is increased, and this must be compared with the operational advantages of continuing to use software that, for example, is completely based on Windows 7.

Slim down
An emerging business infrastructure solution is one of the virtual offices. By providing powerful cloud-based (or centralized) servers, each workstation can be virtualized and delivered to so-called thin clients across the network.

These are devices with a minimum of equipment on board, which are very economical both during purchase and rental, but also in terms of operating costs. A lower energy consumption is advantageous for many users and a support structure is practically not required, since very few physical errors can occur in each case.

The operating system provided for each client may have the version requested by the company. All updates, corrections and other weaknesses are made on the server.

However, since this is a relatively new offer for Windows clients (mainframe plus thin client technology dates back to the 1950s), costs can be relatively high in the Windows environment.

Update the operating system (possibly update the hardware)
The minimum system requirements for Windows 10 are relatively low (GHz, 2 GB of RAM, 20 GB of HD). However, in practice, most applications require a heavier set of hardware to obtain a user experience that is not dominated by rotary sliders such as storage pages for rotating grid plates.

Therefore, update costs vary depending on the existing workstation. It should also be borne in mind that the older the hardware, the more likely it is that important components, such as the motherboard, fail before, for example, updated RAMs fail.
