Xena, a mighty Warrior Princess with a dark past, sets out to redeem herself. She is joined by small town bard, Gabrielle. Together they journey the ancient world and fight for the greater good against ruthless Warlords and Gods.
In ancient Greece, a time of mythical legends. Xena was a mighty female warrior, Xena once left her village and led a army of outlaws that terrorized the lands, and was a former enemy of the legendary hero Hercules. Xena began to regret what she had done and embarked on a quest for redemption. Joined by a young woman named Gabrille, Xena travels across the lands as she battles forces of evil, and would often do battle with her evil foes, the ruthless and charming Ares and Callisto, a warrior woman out to get her revenge on Xena for the death of her family and burning her village when she was a child. And Xena and Gabrille were on occasions joined by trusted friends wannabe warrior, Joxer and thief Autolycus. Seeking adventure and helping people, Xena's courage will change the world...
Well, I like the show,I was hooked the first time i saw it on the tube, and I usually don't care all that much for TV series. Xena is my kind of hero, a human one with flaws. And (gorgeous) female too boot! She tries very hard to do the ''right'' thing but does not always succeed and has lapses of earlier ''warlord'' behavior. Thank the Gods for Gabrielle ''the irritating blond'', she proves to be more then the simple village girl with a hero worship crush. It's interesting to see how much both the characters grow, they are each others complete opposites yet they are so similar. If you like action, drama, slapstick, angst you should definitely watch the series, you'll find out that XWP is all that and so much more... One point of criticism however: I do not agree with AFIN II although well acted by Lucy Lawless & Reneé O'Connor, I think the reason Xena has to stay dead is complete Centaur dung, My only wish is the TBTB (the powers that be) eventually correct this wrong in a Movie! The Warrior Princess can't stay dead!! Anyhow that's just my two dinars on the subject, you are free to agree or disagree.
I just watched this series again for the first time since it ended its run in 2001 and felt compelled to offer some comments.

First of all, you will either love this show or hate it. I can't imagine that anybody could have a Luke-warm opinion about it. The historical inaccuracies alone are enough to turn many people away, and the fight sequences are way over the top. But if reality TV is what you're looking for, then the title of this show should have been enough to warn you off. X:WP is pure escapism--a comic book brought to the small screen. As such, it succeeds as no other TV show ever has.

The performances by Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor were consistently outstanding. I can't imagine any other actresses who could have played Xena and Gabrielle so well. They more than brought the characters to life--they made us fall in love with them. We cared deeply about them as individuals, as well as the relationship that developed between them. Performances for recurring characters, such as Kevin Smith as Aries and Hudson Leick as Callisto, were also exceptional.

The show's small budget didn't allow for such things as really hi-tech special effects or the use of many "extras", though we see improvements in the later seasons. Instead, we got mostly great scripts which usually included just the right balance of drama and comedy, and we witnessed real growth in both main characters. By series end we knew these women as well as we know members of our own families. We were also treated to some incredible music from Joseph LoDuca, exceptional camera work, and wondrous New Zealand scenery.

I cringe at the thought that this show was ever compared to "Baywatch". That was insulting. There can be no argument that Lucy and Renee are two of the most beautiful women to ever walk the planet. What Renee could do for a costume was remarkable. But a show simply about a couple of scantily clad women this is not!

About the "subtext" -- were they or weren't they? The bottom line is that it really doesn't matter. These women shared a love so compelling that we all drowned in it. That's great TV!
The title was initially given to her by Lao Ma. It's basically in recognition of her warrior skills and potential for greatness that Lao Ma saw in her. After Xena left Chin, the title stuck with her. It's comparable to Autolycus, who is called the King of Thieves. He's not a really king, but is so good at it that he is commonly referred to as such. Xena and Gabrielle's bodies never really "entered" into Illusia, but more like their consciousness, sent there by Xena's dead son, Solan. This is why when they leave Illusia, they are fully clothed, albeit wet from the ocean water, as if they just washed up on shore after falling off the cliff. There was always an underlying sexual tension between the two, and in the world of Illusia, Ares was trying to twist her to his side, and part of doing so was to give her a different set of clothing, combat armor of his style. So he took advantage of this and cut off Xena's dress when she least expected it, which gave him the chance to see her completely naked while also giving his soldiers a chance to see her completely naked. Although Xena managed to remain calm, she clearly felt humiliated by the experience. In addition to the humiliation her forced nudity served as a metaphor for her being torn from her regular identity and sense of self, representing self doubt by the lack of identity represented by her clothes. -Last we saw of Valesca she was trapped in molten lava during 'A Necessary Evil' but had attained godhood so that wouldn't actually kill her as it didn't kill the now goddess Callisto. In 'You are there' Charon the boatman refers to Valesca as one of the people who Xena killed whom he has conveyed across the River Styx into the afterlife. This suggests that Xena returned and killed Valesca offscreen, possibly between seasons 5 and 6 when she had the ability to kill gods.

-We're told that only a descendent of Xena can free him from the tomb so this suggests that he was also sealed in it by one of her descendents, most likely her daugher Eve. However, the magical object keeping him trapped is the 'Eye of Hephestus' which we've previously glimpsed on Olympus, Hephestus being Aphrodite's late husband and suggesting that perhaps she also had a hand in Ares' incarceration. In 'Deja Vu all over again' Ares remarks that 'you trapped me in the tomb' to the reincarnations of Xena, Joxer and Gabrielle suggesting it was Gabrielle who was responsible. Vanessa Angel had been cast in Xena, but was not able to fly out to New Zealand, because she had fallen sick with the flu and the title role had been recast with Lucy Lawless. Presumably Jet spends the rest of his life in prison as we see him sentanced to in 'Prince of Assassins'. In 'Eve' we are told that Meg has taken her sons and daughters to visit family in Athens. We know that Meg is an orphan and that Joxer is from Athens so it implies she is going to visit Jace who must still be alive. In a manner of speaking, their souls are now reincarnated in their descendants, Harry, Mattie and Annie as indeed are other Xena/Hercules characters in the series production crew. Of course we also still have the Xena and Gabby clones we saw in 'Send in the Clones' kicking around plus Hercules and AresWe never find out for sure. However, her reasoning in 'The Furies' is extremely sound on the matter and it would explain Ares' passion for her and Livia/Eve (his granddaughter), her astounding abilities and why Xena as a demigod can take on and defeat other demigods and even gods which she wouldn't be able to do as a mortal woman. It would also explain why after 'The Furies' she never again gets romantically involved with Hercules who would actually be her uncle.-Unknown but the subject of much fervent fan speculation. From her final conversation with Xena's ghost in 'A Friend in Need' it seems likely she will continue adventuring at least for the time being. After that theories range from her adopting her own female protege to train as Xena did to her, pairing up with Eve to spread the word of Eli, taking her place as Queen of the Amazons and leading them into immortal exile on Paradise Island or simply going back to her home town of Potidea to live out her life with her sister Lila and niece Sarah. All we know for sure is that she has children as we meet her descendent, Janice Covington in the Xena story 'The Xena Scrolls' which is set in the 1940s.-The 'Twilight of the Gods' is a prophecy regarding the fall of the Olympian gods such as Zeus, Hera etc It begins in the Hercules ep 'Armageddon Now' with the death of Strife, killed by Callisto using a dagger dipped in blood from the Golden Hind, one of the few weapons which can kill immortals. It is followed by the death of Hera who is killed by unknown means by her husband/brother Zeus in the Xena ep 'God Fearing Child'. Zeus himself is then killed by his son Hercules using the rib of a Titan (the ancestors of the gods). Athena, 'Goddess of War and Wisdom' then takes the throne but she, Poesidon, Discord, Artemis, Hades, Strife's twin and Hephestus are all killed by Xena using the power of the God of Eli. Both Ares and Aphrodite temporarily lose their goodhood but have it restored in the Xena story 'You are there'. In 'The Xena Scrolls' and several other Xena and Hercules' stories we see that Ares is still up and around in the modern world and still has his god powers. There's no word on Aphrodite, her son Cupid, his wife and their son Bliss or Appollo and Hermes, Olympian gods whom we meet on Xena and Hercules but we never see killed during the Twilight. Also there's no word on what happens to Odin or any of the other non-Greek deities we meet during both series. Presumably they were either killed off by the agents of the 'God of Eli' in the same way as Xena was employed against the Olympians or their existence is tolerated as Ares and Aphrodite's is because human belief in them and worship of them ceases almost entirely. In 'Deja Vu all over again' Ares comments that he is now significantly depowered because he has not been worshipped in the modern era -At the end of the last episode 'A Friend in Need pt2' Xena is dead having sacrificed herself to release the souls of thousands of people inadvertently killed by her actions in the past. Gabrielle boards a ship sailing back to Greece and as she is watching the sun setting she is joined by an apparition of Xena who assures her that she will always be with her. But when the camera draws back we no longer see Xena, only Gabrielle standing by herself on the deck of the ship sailing off into the sunset. The scene has numerous interpretations but it is widely accepted that Xena remains with Gabrielle only as a fond memory and inspiration and not as any form of spiritual prescence, for all intents and purposes Gabrielle is alone, for this lifetime at least.-The original blue-skinned demon and King of Hell, Mephistopheles, is destroyed by Xena's attack in the episode "The Haunting of Amphipolis"... but since he is initially in Hell, his existence is diminished to an utter oblivion; he is in turn, neither sent to Hell nor trapped in purgatory as his essence was already a part of Hell. Due to the fact that one cannot kill someone who is already dead, the fact that his physical body and soul were destroyed is highly likely. However, since he was made flesh after absorbing Eve's blood (the blood of Eli), it is likely that his physical body was also destroyed... since his initial defeat at the hands of Xena, it is highly likely that his soul is replenished and re-used to embody another as most bodies are resurrected when extremely evil. In this case, since he was the reputable King of Hell, Mephistopheles' existence is completely diminished, leaving no more than a memory as his essence is destroyed. In the episode, "You are There," in an interview, his defeat is re-stated, and his death is confirmed, but he is not seen on line with the slew of villains who were slain by Xena. As a result, it is safe to assume that his essence and being was completely destroyed and replenished.

Lucifer, the second and current King of Hell, was tricked by Xena into committing the seven deadly sins and was forced into the throne of Hell in the episode "Heart of Darkness". After assuming this throne, he is interviewed in the episode, "You are There," thereby confirming that he blames Xena for trapping him in Hell and in turn, forcing him to take the throne. Due to his built up anger and rage, Lucifer's hatred is, in turn, paralleled by his sexual appetite for Xena... whom although he hates, he also holds a great lust towards because of being the one who awakened the emotions for which archangels are essentially not allowed to act upon. The very fact that humans differ from archangels in the sense that they are given this will to choose to act upon their decisions and that Lucifer was not allowed to be open about these same gestures, ended up sealing his fate as the King of Hell and transforming him into the archetype red-skinned demon.
