Now - that's a game I remember from the good old days(80's) of text-graphic and console-commands to play your game. XLarn is a nice refresh of the old concept of Larn. Crawl though the dungeon, bash monsters, gather loot, avoid traps other nasty things and and recover the potion to save your daughter and win the game. That's about it. And ofc. there is perma death and paying taxes - if you succeed and try again ;-) Graphics are simple tileset's and sound is non-existing. Which is nice bc. it helps the game to stay true to it's origin. The user interface is practicable and makes the gameplay more easy, since you don't have to remember text-commands like 'mle' or 'sph' to cast spells. As usual there are a quiet a few hidden features and combination of weapons, strange items to wear and magic effects to discover :-) What I miss from other larn-games is the option to create your own dungeon maps and tilesets. Pro-tip for the dev: Let the players upload their dungeon maps/tileset's to an online repository where they are accesible for everybody. Tip for the old-timers: If you are are a old Larn-player recommend to start with difficullty-level 25.. Another 'Ancient School' golden oldie, the graphics have a suitable beating with the ugly stick +2 and the sound of silence is deafening the gameplay is where it's at. A Roguelike RPG that's as hard as nails and drippng in atmosphere. Forget the basic graphics. Forget the sound of silence. Enjoy a game from yester year and give XLarn a go.. New update to review, changing to negative. It's been two years and devs have not added any of the things they said they were going to add to the game like sounds, changing the player sprite depending on your armour and weapon or removing the "popout menus" when you find something on the ground. Game has major, major interface problems and is user unfriendly. Devs promised things and then didn't deliver. Game has been left to rot on steam for years. I regret buying it for full price at launch to support it. original review: --------------------------------------------------------------- At first I had a negative review but I changed it to positive because I have started to have a lot of fun with the game. There are problems with it though: 1. no sound 2. sprites are not too good and less readable I think than ASCII 3. MAJOR every time you are at the start of your turn on a square with an object on it the game brings up a menu to make you select between ignoring the object or picking it up, reading it etc. depending on what it is. You can just move or take an action rather than have to actually press the button to ignore the object but it's still annoying. 4. You get HP back when resting or moving but there's no rest until healed button. Instead the closest you have is to do 99. which is 9 then 9 then 5 on numeric keypad which rests you for 99 turns. You will have to do this several times to get your hp back though and it takes AGES. 5. There seems to be no fast travel or auto travel of any kind, it's just you and the movement keys, held down if you want to risk it. There is a version of the game called Nlarn which is free. It runs in the console and has ASCII graphics but in most ways is more usable than this version. I'm still leaving a positive review though because I am having fun playing this version and I'm trying to trust the developers to iron out the problems. A great rework of the classic Amiga title I loved as a kid Larn.. New update to review, changing to negative. If you want some quick challenging fun get yourself a copy of Xlarn. It's just like the original we played 25 years ago but with pretty pictures instead of keyboard characters. This game is fun each and every time you play it. Basically you want to get the Lance of Death. It has multiple difficulty levels to keep you coming back for more after you conquer it, also has local, friend and global high score charts so bring it on. 100/100 Also it won't be quick if you finish the game but all the times you die will be and they will inspire you to come back for more.. One of the most addictive games ever once you get the hang of it, great to see it back!. Touted as one of the five Major Classic Roguelikes that started it all, XLarn is mind-bogglingly addicting even to this day. It is recognized as the first in the genre to have an above-ground hub and shop area that forever changed the roguelike landscape. Now to be crystal-clear, XLarn is a heavily edited version of the original Larn title, but thats often the case with games that originated decades ago . I bought this title for historical purposes - never expecting to really play it because I assumed it would be too dated - and oh boy, I was wrong. This is a heavy hitter, and easily still competes with the best modern roguelikes out there. There are multiple layers of complexity and risk/reward systems. First, there is a bank system where you invest your money in order to get score as well as earn interest. That part gets tricky because the higher your score when you win, the characters proceeding deal with forever harder situations - yeah, it's meta like that. Crazy. The weird thing is, even with all the complexity packed in - it's super easy to wrap your head around and get playing. Keyboard only, mouse optional. There is ample text to help you along. Just dive in. No 'pros', no 'cons'. This is a piece of roguelike history. This is one of the pillars that the whole genre rests upon. Whether you get it for historical purposes, or you get it to experience an awesome game - just play it at some point. You can download the original for free, or pay a few bucks here on Steam for a version with some quality-of-life upgrades.. A great rework of the classic Amiga title I loved as a kid Larn.. Ugggh. I love, love, love the original Larn, and so very much wanted to like this version. but this game isn't really good. It's missing useful features from the old versions and the stuff that's been added doesn't make the game any better. In fact, the game omits certain things that make the original game play better (showing what floor tiles you've seen, being able to unwield a weapon, etc.) (As an aside, there's also the concern that this game uses code from the original, which cannot be used in a commercial project. It's probably a full-blown rewrite, but it plays distressingly similar to the original. Also, I don't know what the legal (or ethical) situation is in using nearly the same name as the original without permission of the original author or his family.) Seriously, if you really want to play a Larn (and you should, they are great introductory-level roguelikes with some unique features), or if you have nostalgia for the original, just play the old DOS version, find a modern source port, or play the browser-based one. The addition of mediocre graphics doesn't justify spending money on this.
