Viz, you need to address this packaging. The cases you’re using are damaging the discs.

DP is an embarrassment and to this day, I still fail to see why the fan base praises it as if it were holy art thou. The only good aspect in the dub was the soundtracks TPCI created during Battle Frontier, which were also carried over to DP. They have aged really well, something that cannot be said about 4Kids’ dated crap soundtracks.

Speaking about personalities, Brock’s Happiny is easily the worst offender out there. How can a puny and useless Pokémon possess greater strength is seriously beyond me. Lifting rocks, humans, well anything deemed heavy? Deus Ex Machina much? The writers went way too far with this crap. I can easily forgive this attribution with fighting Pokémon but not puny babies.

DP was also known for its very controversial moments. When Dawn captured Buizel, the fan base literally erupted with anger. They wanted Ash to capture it because of its battle oriented persona and Aipom go to Dawn due to its contest preference. After that capture, a trade between both Pokémon occurred later on, and the fan base declared this moment very unpopular. Had these set personalities never been established before their respective captures, then the controversy would’ve never existed. Zoey is another problem because she was a damn snoop for even suggesting this controversial trade in addition to her acting Miss Perfect.

My other gripe with this awful series is how insulting Team Rocket’s motto and the actual Sinnoh theme sounded. Way too cartoony and nothing of evil like it’s predecessors. I believe this awful theme has 2 other variants and they still sounded like crap. Saturday morning cartoon-esque. And because I’m mentioning soundtracks, only the first 51 episodes feature the dated 4Kids soundtrack, a big mistake from TPCI back in the day. I’m glad that after that point, they were phased out for good.

Top positive review.
The DP saga is easily the worst saga ever and the most overrated by the fan base to this day. For many years, I always thought that the 4Kids dub of AG was bad because Veronica Taylor’s take on May felt out of character. May wasn’t supposed to sound angry all the time, but it’s possible that Taylor didn’t like her dual role since the tension was always present. TPCI thankfully realized what a terrible mistake 4Kids made and portrayed May as intended. What they failed to prevent however, was Dawn sounding very cocky and self centered in the dub.
Other issues with DP is how hypocritical the fan base can be. How is “Thunder Armor” from that one AG episode awful, yet “Counter Shield” is praised by many? Ash has always been known to think outside the box in order to overcome any obstacles in battles and this isn’t an exception. I wasn’t impressed with Counter Shield, and it sure wasn’t any different from Thunder Armor. And you know what, I prefer Thunder Armor any day. If Ash wanted to protect his teammates from attacks, why didn’t he teach them “Protect”? Some nonsense strategy he pulled off, and Fantina is a fool for even coining this “term”.

I also seem to recall that one time in the Wallace Cup arc, most fans were unhappy with Dawn defeating May, as the latter was already experienced by then. I can also blame the writers for this drivel because they made Dawn lose twice in a row without her advancing further, hence why her depression kicked in. The Wallace cup should’ve taken place sometime towards the end, but no, this poor planning made May a loser. But then again, her appearance was a lot better than Dawn’s insulting cameo in BW.

And to end this on a very sour note, the animation at the time clashed horribly with the CGI effects. It was way too bright and too flashy for my taste. During AG, it was just an experiment somewhere in “Advanced Batttle”, but the creators were way ahead with the technology in DP and this didn’t work in their favor. At least the flashiness in BW onward can be justified, but not here.
Another problem with Dawn’s portrayal in the dub is her cockiness because she cares nothing more than her appearance. While there’s nothing wrong with that, the way how she expressed it makes her look and sound like a bimbo. Jessie can be forgiven for her vain attitude since she has been like that since the beginning, but why Dawn? It was poorly executed and felt forced.

I was able to snag a copy of this early, and I have to say I’m incredibly disappointed with how these discs are packaged. The first six discs are on insert trays which are secure enough, but Disc 7 on the back is held with no clips whatsoever, and falls out with almost no effort! Because of this, the last disc is almost always loose in the case and is always scratched! I’ve gotten two of these sets and both of them came with a heavily scratched Disc 7! This is my first Pokémon DVD release and I have to say, unfortunately it’ll also be my last. I’m not sure if the previous seasons suffer the same problem, I was planning on going back and buying them all, but this left a very sour first impression! It’s a shame, because I love the Diamond and Pearl arc of the anime, but I guess this’ll have to be a digital download for me.
“No need to worry!” is easily the worst running gag quote ever, and this is just one of the worst aspects of DP (and there’s quite a few!) The quote was shoehorned excessively; a lot more than the overused “Advance Adventure” soundtrack that was mostly kept in the dubs of AG, but not always as there were 4 instances where it was removed. The quote itself was sometimes heard more than once in a episode, and it felt super old super fast after the first time hearing it. I found it too grating to hear because Dawn’s hypocritical tone didn’t help at all. Overconfidence much? At least in Ash’s stance, him acting cocky was hilarious in Kanto, but it was poorly executed with Dawn.
