Sounds like you are running PS V1, as that code works on my XP machines which run PS V2.

The following code will work on a Windows Server but will not work on a Windows XP WorkStation.
Get-Host should display the version of PowerShell.

If upgrading to V2 is not possible for you, V1 still has some trap exceptions which you can use. See this link for detailed explanation of them. Note that the last one " Try-Catch-Finally" wont apply to you.
