Remove and replace the battery. Hold the Volume Down button while pressing the power button until the "Download Mode" picture displays. Then release the buttons.
3. If the phone is "semi-bricked" ; i.e., the "phone-exclamation mark-computer" picture appears on power up (perhaps from a bad ROM flash):
3. The Power + Volume Down Method: If the phone doesn't display the "phone-exclamation mark-computer" picture on power up:
2. The USB + Volume Down + Volume Up Method: Download mode (Noticeable by an Android robot digging with a shovel) is reached by taking everything out (Battery, SIM, MicroSD). Then putting in battery. Holding the volume buttons, you plug in the USB cable to your computer. (Don't press the power button at all in this method).
Be sure the Samsung USB drivers for the phone are installed on your computer. Remove and replace the battery. Connect the phone to the computer with the USB cable. The "phone-exclamation mark-computer" picture should display on the phone's screen. Hold the Volume Up+Volume Down+Power buttons down simultaneously.The screen should go blank, then the picture should appear again. When the screen goes blank a second time, release the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume Up+Volume Down buttons down.

5. If NONE of the steps work after trying multiple times to attempt to get your phone into Download Mode:
4. If the phone does not allow you to go into Download mode after trying the aforementioned steps above you can try this method to "force" it into download mode:

Putting the Phone into Download Mode.
There are multiple ways to put the Captivate into Download Mode:
1. Using ADB. If the phone is operational and your computer sees it through the ADB USB driver, enter the command "adb reboot download" at the command prompt while the phone is connected via USB and powered up.
Be sure the Samsung USB drivers for the phone are installed on your computer. Remove the Battery, SIM Card, and any External SDCards. With the Battery removed plug the USB into your phone. While holding both the Up+Down Volume button and the USB is plugged into your phone - put the battery back into the back of the phone. You should see the Download mode screen pop up. If you see the Powered Off Charging screen - attempt the above steps again.
