According to police officials, the incident occurred at 2 am when accused Amit Ravi Rathod asked a constable for permission to go to the toilet. Thirty minutes later, the officials discovered that he had allegedly used his shirt to hang himself from the window of the toilet.Recalling the incident, inspector Diwakar Shelke said, “He entered the toilet with suicide on his mind.

He had kept the tap running. Our official got suspicious when he didn’t return after 20 minutes. He went near the toilet door and called out to Rathod two to three times. When he didn’t hear a reply, the official called all other officers on the night shift and opened the door. Apparently Rathod had used a bucket to hang himself from a window that is seven feet from the floor.”Around 3 am the police called doctors. Officials then did a punchnama and around 10 am his body was sent to JJ Hospital for post-mortem. The crime branch has initiated a probe to ascertain whether Rathod had indeed committed suicide, the police said.Rathod was arrested for his alleged involvement in a housebreaking and theft in a house in Swapna Nagari where Rathod’s wife, Vidya, worked as a help. Rathod would visit the house to drop and pick up Vidya.

On April 27 he allegedly stole `5 lakh in cash and some jewellery from the home. With the help of CCTV footage he was arrested in his home in Keshav Pada, Mulund. Rathod has three cases of housebreaking registered against him in Mulund and Bhandup police station. He was in police custody for eight months in the Bhandup case while he had been remanded to police custody till May 3 in the Mulund case.There were three inmates in the lockup along with Rathod and one independent witness who had come to police station to lodge China electric water heater Suppliers an non-cognisable complaint, the police said. Crime branch official Sanjay Surve said, “We are taking the statements of other inmates and police officials who were present at the time. Doctors said there weren’t any bruises on his body. Initially we came to know that constables were sleeping, but we have to investigate this too.”
