The Basics of An Electric Fire Pump

The fire protection systems installed in various commercial buildings require large amounts of water to successfully extinguish a fire. Apart from the substantial quantity of water, another challenge often faced by high-rise structures is ensuring that the fire suppressant travels to all locations in the building, including the topmost floor. Even standpipes require highly-pressurized water supply lines to douse the flames engulfing a remote section of the building. In order to fulfill this integral role of supplying large quantities of highly-pressurized water, a piping industrial is incorporated into the network of firefighting devices.
These fire pumps behave like pressure boosters and often help fire protection systems to effectively suppress a fire. This holds especially true in towering structures where the water actually has to work against a gravitational force to reach the top portion of the building. However, fire pumps are not available as a singular kind. Instead, these pumps are segregated into different types based on the optimizing capacity of a system's pressure. The three common fire pumps available on the market are: diesel fire pumps, electric fire pumps, and steam-turbine Fire Protection Services. They have been classified according to the power source that drives the pump. In order to present a clear picture of the basics of a fire pump, let us take a look at an electric-powered fire pump, how it works, and what are its distinguishing features.
How does an electric fire pump work?
The electric fire pump is known as such since it needs an electrical connection to perform all its functions. The working principles of a fire pump involve maintaining a consistent water pressure level along the entire FPS network in a building. These pumps may be either connected to a local water supply or an overhead tank. Usually, municipal water sources or storage tanks are unable to meet the sprinkler's hydraulic requirements as the pressure here is quite low. This is when a fire pump comes to the rescue and compensates for a low-pressure water level by mechanically adding more energy to the fluid. The pump derives this mechanical energy from an in-built electric motor.
Differences between Electric and Diesel Fire Pumps
Since steam-turbines are an ancient method of powering something, steam-driven fire pumps too are becoming obsolete. That leaves an average consumer with either a diesel-backed fire pump or an electrically-powered fire pump. Both these types of pumps perform essentially the same set of functions. Then, how exactly are they different from each other? Since fires are known to disrupt electrical power supplies in their devastation, electric fire pumps are not as reliable as diesel pumps. However, they are much easier to install and maintain than diesel pumps as they are independent of using any kind of fuel as a power source. Another key difference is that diesel pumps are larger in size. This means that they often require an external facility such as a pump room to house the device. On the other hand, electric pumps are ideal for buildings with minimal spaces.
