When the water level in the pipes drops below a certain level, a fire pump supplies the system with more water until all of the flames are completely doused. The flow of water generated by a jockey pump is said to be somewhere between 5 to 10 percent of the main fire pump water flow. The technical features of the pump itself are that it is multi-staged and centrifugal in nature.

Since the pump helps to sustain a specific water pressure at all times, it prevents the sprinklers from going off at random times.
