3. You have to go find the program, and browse out to the CD to open the .pptx that is located there.
I know. It's frustrating, isn't it? This is why I asked Ganesh how to edit the HTML to point to the Viewer on the harddrive, because that would alleviate some of the issues.

The Viewer won't run from CD, so an autorun's not gonna happen. If you know your recipients have PowerPoint, you could create an autorun.INF file.
PowerPoint 2010 packaging cd doesn't include the pptview.exe.

There needs to be an autorun program that has the viewer on it, or else, this function is now pretty much useless in my opinion.
If that's the case, then do you know if it's possible to edit the HTML to point to the Viewer on the harddrive, if it's installed in the typical place it should be installed to by default?

Inicdently WordPrefect presentations has a much better set up for doign this called Show on the Go - it is way better. Downside is I tried (in the latest version X5) to import the Power Point pptx file but it managed to mess up some of the background graphics. Should have used it in teh first place instead of wasting 2 days on Power Point 2010!

Now, I tried this the other day -- I downloaded and installed the Viewer from the prompt on the Package for CD splash screen. Problem is, when I clicked the presentation link, it opened in PowerPoint, not in the Viewer! (And since it was a PPT file, it opened in editing view, yikes.) I think this will be a problem, and I suspect that I will try to edit the actual presentation link so that it opens with the Viewer and not just with PPT itself. Haven't gotten a tuit to work on that yet, though, so if anybody knows off the top of thier head what you'd have to use there to open the presentation in the Viewer, please post it!
The major change in the options is that PowerPoint 2010 does not offer to save the presentations as Power Point viewer formatted files. There is no file format prompt at all in PowerPoint 2010, and the accompanying options to play all presentations, etc., are no longer provided. If you are trying to create an automated playback experience, you can use the create a video option rather than the Package Presentation for CD feature.

I finally decided to (as one of Echos S also suggested) to download the ppviewer.exe, copy this and the powerpoint file to a seperate folder and burn a CD from that. As the recipient of the powerpoint presentation isn't totally familiar with PowerPoint I had to send screen shots of how the powerpoint viewer installs and how to run the file. Once installed it does run really well so that seems to be teh best way to go for now until Microsoft can come up with a better pack and go routine. Having one which displays a web file which insists on downloading the viewer rather than packaging the viewer and giving the option to then install it is one of the daftest bits of programming I have seen for quite a time. Imagine sending this to be shown at a public conference or meeting and the recipient didn't have Office 2010 installed - and would then be obliged (assuming there was a good wireless internet connection) to download the viewer - or have to spend time prior to the meeting to do this. Its all a very unprofessional piece of programming thats seems to have been hastily thrown together. Which is a shame as PowerPoint 2010 has some great new features.

I thought the whole purpose of packaging something for CD was to make it easy for the person receiving the CD. guess not anymore.
I upgraded office rom 2007 to 2010. After saving my PowerPoint 2010 presentation named - ss.pptm, I go to package the file for CD, but it doesn't add the pptview when packaging CD when 2007 did. when done packaging, I do notice that after inserting the CD, the popup does say Run PresentationPackage.html then prompts to download the PPT viewer in IE. I don't see the pptview.exe on the created CD either.

I have not only come acrosss this but yet another one in that when I try to create a CD package direct to the CD drive (rather than a folder) it starts the process then about 1/4 the way through it comes up with and error meessage saying that 'Cannot write to the CD writer another process (i.e. itself) is writing to the burner. I have tried svereal times now both with a re-writable CD and also a new one . It does seem that MS have rushed this out with an awful lot of bugs in it. 2007 could package up reasonably well so npn- PP2007 users could run the presentaion . 2010 does seem to be a very backward step.

PPT didn't ever format any presentations as "viewer formatted files." I'm not sure what "file format prompt" means, either. Do you mean that there is no longer any kind of command that prompts the new Viewer to play the powerpoint files listed on the splash screen?

The new viewer requires an install -- it cannot run from CD. So MS put in a splash screen instead. If the user's already downloaded the Viewer, if they click the presentation link, it should open the presentation in the Viewer. You can edit the splash screen's HTML to include additional information to explain that if you want.

I guess this is the tradeoff for a viewer that supports the new transitions and embedded video and stuff.
