The Elkhorn River borders the west side of this area, and many people enjoy floating down this smooth-flowing river on a tube or rowing along in a canoe. "Tanking" is a unique way of travelling down the Elkhorn that is becoming increasingly popular omaha real estate. Facilities include a playground, 11 sports fields, trails, a skate park, and picnic areas. The park was named for Chief Ta-Ha-Zouka of the Omaha Tribe who, together with Chief Blackbird, made the first peace treaty with the governor of the Louisiana Territory. This area is actually named after Ta-Ha-Zouka, whose name translates as "elk's horn."

Elkhorn also offers some unique educational opportunities. The Metropolitan Community College has a campus here, which includes an 1,100 square foot art gallery with free admission. There is also a private college prep school for boys at the Benedictine Abbey in Elkhorn. Mount Michael Benedictine School has a reputation for providing an exceptionally high-quality education.

Elkhorn is an affluent area with incomes averaging well above the state average. While home prices start around $150,000, the majority of homes here fall into the luxury category, so the average list price is currently around $400,000. If you are looking for a luxury home in Omaha's growth zone, Elkhorn is the place for you.
