Slack Commits to Paying Contractors as laid-off Baristas Protests

Slack has said that the company is committed to paying it laid off contractors during shut down. The announcement regarding paying the laid-off contractors came from the company when the laid-off baristas protested against the decision. The company has confirmed that it will provide three-month wages to the laid-off five baristas along with a full-time employment opportunity in Slack. The five laid -off baristas were employed for Slack at the headquarters. They all came to know through their contracting agency that their services have been terminated. They were further instructed to stay from the San Francisco office as the baristas were suspected of the pandemic.

The baristas came to know regarding their termination by the contracting agency Premier Talent Partners on March 6. It was told to them Premier Talent Partners that their services will end on March 27, and the office of Slack has been closed from March 6 due to the fear of the spread of the deadly disease. Meanwhile, it was reported that about 1323 people were found infected in the United States by Thursday. Amidst all, the five baristas who were terminated by the contracting agency raised their concerns with the top leadership of Slack.

The baristas, while raising their concerns to the CEO of Slack, Stewart Butterfield, briefed him that they have been laid off from the company in such a crucial time when they could not get employment in any other company. The baristas mentioned in their letter written to the top leadership of Slack that they may be infected with the disease. A laid-off barista was suspected of having some symptoms. In the time they have been terminated when all other companies are laying off their employees due to the pandemic. The baristas said that they are sick and thrown out from the job making their life difficult even though they served the people working at the company honestly and efficiently.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of Slack stated that the termination of the five baristas working at the San Francisco office is nowhere related to the current outbreak. The company has already informed the contracting agency to end the services of the five baristas before the office shut down due to the pandemic. The spokesperson further said that the company is planning to launch a vendor management program through which it will provide full-time employment to the employees. When the matter was briefed to the CEO of the company, Stewart Butterfield, he instructed to accelerate the vendor management program so that all the employees who are serving the company through contracting agencies could be offered full-time employment.

Looking at the severity of the issue, Stewart Butterfield instructed to provide the five baristas healthcare access and three months’ wages instantly. He further said that the company deeply value the services and contributions of their employees, whether full time or contract. He also said that all the employees would be treated well, and their issues will be resolved. Meanwhile, the contracting agency, Premier Talent Partners, has denied any statement over the problem even after several requests. The five baristas have also been ensured that they will get full-time employment with the company. Amidst all, The other employees working at Slack have also come forward to help the baristas, and they have raised $15,380 by setting up a GoFundMe movement.
