realtek AC '97 audio not working.
I just upgraded my computer to Win 8 and now my Realtek AC'97 audio device will not work. Windows 8 upgrade assistant did not indicate that I would have a compatibility issue with this sound card that is integrated with my mother board.
I've tried the realtek website but can not find a driver that will work. It seems that the audio controller is showing as "not installed".
Has anyone encountered this issue?

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community Forum.
It seems the drivers for Realtek AC 97 are not available for windows 8.
However, I would suggest you to download the driver for windows 7 and run them in compatibility mode:
Follow the steps given:
1. Place the driver installation file on the Desktop. 2. Right Click the driver installation file and select Properties/Compatibility Tab. Select the appropriate options in from the list in the following image. 3. Click Apply/OK. 4. Right Click the file and select the Run as Administrator option to install.
Download the drivers from the link given:
No sound in Windows:

Thanks for the reply but these instructions did not help me.
I tried to run this file from the link you provided in compatibility mode but this is a zipped folder, containing many files. I tried several of the files in compatibility modes for Win 7 and Win XP SP3 but my system kept giving me the same error for the auido controller, i.e. "there was a problem installing the required drivers, contact the manufacturer website", which I did but could not find a single driver file. I tried the setup.exe, the SOUNDMAN file and the RTKVAC64.sys but none worked.
Is there a specific file within the standalone zip package that I should be running in compatibility mode?
This sound card does work at Windows 7, as I have the computer dual boot and it still works when booted in Windows 7. With that said, should I be choosing compatibility for Windows 7?
