Five Times We Hated Helen in Netflix’s Ozark

From the moment Helen set foot in the Ozarks, she made life hell for everyone. Played by actress Janet McTeer, the character is one of the most insensitive and ruthless people on the show. Her methods and schemes irked the audience, to the point where they could not stand her. Here are some moments in which we just wanted Helen to die:
Five Times We Hated Helen in Netflix’s Ozark
When She Tormented Ruth

Since the inception, Ruth was fiercely loyal towards Marty to the point where she did not even flinch before murdering her uncle. But Helen did not believe her and felt it was all an act. She was adamant about her belief that Ruth was an FBI informant and snitched on Marty’s business. When Helen came in with the hitmen, Cade and Marty were helpless, and they saw Ruth being waterboarded by her. The scene was so terrifying that the viewers could not help but despise Helen with all their might.

When She Terrorized Marty and the Snells

Helen arrived in Ozarks as the hard-headed executioner of the gang who was unconcerned with everything else but the “client”. Initially, she was commissioned to search and murder the killer of Del Rio. Providing Marty with a mere two-hour window to sort his conflicts with the Snells was intended to antagonize the man. She was well aware that neither was Marty Del’s murderer nor could he control the Snells. Jacob came in like an angel when he murdered Ash for vengeance, but that just aggravated the fans’ disapproval of Helen.

When She Took a Dig at the Byrdes in Front of Navarro

Navarro felt like a threat to both, the characters in the show and the audience watching the show. But when the third season revealed a relationship between him and Helen, it became evident that she has always been the underlying issue. The Byrdes family assisted the crime gang in starting their casino business. They even helped it grow by purchasing Big Muddy. But that was not ample to gain Helen’s trust. She went behind their backs and suggested a counter business that was against the family. She knew that this would eventually render the Byrdes useless to Navarro and he would come after them. Maybe it was this overambitious approach that ended her life.

When She Ordered Ben’s Execution

Ben’s condition threatened everyone, but he still was not worthy of what came upon him. Helen ran a tight ship with no wiggle room which put Wendy on the spot when Ben relapsed. Wendy tried to defend him and hence put him in a psychiatric facility, but Darlene flushed her efforts down the drain. Helen could not be less bothered about Wendy’s affection for her sibling. She executed Ben despite knowing his mental issue.

When She Tried to Murder the Byrdes Family

Helen was suspicious of the Byrdes family since the first instance. But she took it too far when she conspired to murder them. The woman contradicted the efforts of the family by getting a casino license. She even went to the extent of forging a deal with the FBI to portray Marty as an informant. If Wendy were not quick on her feet to put the FBI and Navarro on the same team, Helen would have succeeded in eliminating the Byrdes. This despicable act by Helen was not justifiable since Byrdes has gone above and beyond to help the cartel.
