Situated just across the river from the heart of downtown Sacramento, West Sacramento is one of the city’s finest places to call home. Not to mention, it’s a great place to spend an afternoon — or an entire day, if you’re visiting from elsewhere in the region or another city entirely. West Sacramento hosts a myriad of restaurants, breweries, local businesses, beautiful parks, and other attractions to create a fun and diverse itinerary.

Take a look at the many things to do in West Sacramento to enhance your visit — or help you discover more about your community if you’re lucky enough to call this city your home.

Any good day begins with a cup of coffee. Start your journey in West Sacramento at Identity Coffees, one of the most Instagrammable coffee shops in the city. In addition to their flagship in Midtown, Identity Coffees recently expanded to this newer location in West Sacramento. Their Westside location has the same minimalist interior filled with gorgeous wood pieces and custom metal fixtures, all handcrafted by their employees. And of course, you can expect the excellent small-batch roasted coffee they are known for.

Speaking of Instagrammable spots in Sacramento, you may want to grab a photo of the shiny and striking sculpture along the river in West Sacramento. Head to River Walk Trail to encounter this awe-inspiring public art installation. And don’t worry — it won’t be hard to miss! Subtile is a towering sculpture comprised of 4,000 steel discs crafted by Prague-based artist Federico Díaz. Pause for a photo before your walk along the River Walk Trail. If you visit on a sunny day, you can even capture some brilliant sunlight reflected in the shiny reflective discs.

West Sacramento is connected to downtown Sacramento with not just one — but two — iconic bridges. Take a stroll along the historic and pedestrian-friendly I Street Bridge, which has two walkways on either side of the roadway. Return a few years from now to see the brand new I Street Bridge that will be added upstream from the existing structure, which dates back 100 years. The existing bridge will continue to be used by the railroad and the new structure will feature bike lanes and wide sidewalks for pedestrians.

And of course, you must catch a glimpse of Tower Bridge, which never ceases to amaze both visitors and long-time residents. This shiny golden bridge gives the “Golden” Gate Bridge a run for its money! Snap a photo of this iconic Sacramento landmark from River Walk Park or while standing on I Street Bridge.

Hop on Board the Sacramento RiverTrain

There are few things more magical than a train ride along the river! Hop on board the Sacramento RiverTrain for a refreshing view of the city and surrounding landscape. The rail line spans 14 miles from West Sacramento to Woodland, traveling at a leisurely 10–15 miles per hour. The Sacramento RiverTrain offers a wide variety of excursions, ranging from boozy adults-only experiences to kid-friendly rides, like the Trick-or-Treat Train, the Holiday Excursion Train, the Pumpkin Train, the Easter Egg Express, the Great Train Robbery, and more.

Cheer on the River Cats at Raley Field
Sacramento River Cats

West Sacramento hosts Raley Field, the home of the Sacramento River Cats. Spend a spring or summer afternoon cheering on the River Cats and enjoying some popcorn, a hot dog or a beer! Grab a blanket and get $10 general admission tickets for the lawn, and enjoy a cool summer night under the lights. Check out the River Cats’ schedule to plan your next outing to the ballpark.

There is no shortage of craft beer in West Sacramento. You can even go on your own brewery crawl by visiting three microbreweries in the same general area near Washington Lake. Stop by Yolo Brewing, Bike Dog Brewing and Jackrabbit Brewing, which happen to be some of our favorite breweries in the Sacramento area.

River Walk Park West Sacramento

West Sacramento is nearly surrounded by the Sacramento River, which runs along the eastern border of the city. There are plenty of places to access the river, including the variety of riverfront community parks. The popular River Walk Park sits between Tower and I Street Bridges and is home to many events, concerts and festivals. The park also includes an extensive system of paved walking and biking trails, offering incomparable views of Old Sacramento and the Sacramento skyline.
