There are many different types of recessed ceiling lights out there from which you can choose to light up your indoor spaces or even your overhung exterior spaces. Recessed ceiling lighting, which has traditionally come in the form of incandescent and halogen lights, is excellent not only for space lighting but also for accent lighting as well.

Back in the day, most of these options were, as specified, incandescent or halogen, although there were probably other available options. Once LED lights hit the scene, although some of their advantages were touted, they were typically too expensive for most people to seriously consider as a lighting solution.

All of that changed just about 20 years ago after the price of the semiconductor materials from which they were made dropped sharply. This brought the price of LED light bulbs down significantly and today, LEDs can be found in many homes around the country.

LEDs in general offer plenty of draws over other traditional forms of lighting, including the fact that they are extremely energy efficient, produce very little heat, last a long time, and are even environmentally friendly. These are some of the benefits that apply to LED lights in general; there are several others that go along with solutions in LED recessed downlighting, such as LED wafer lights.

One of the big draws of LED wafer lights is the fact that there are LED wafer downlights that do not require housing. For example, some of the indoor spotlights that are sometimes used as downlights require special housing that serves, among other things as insulators or reflectors. LED wafers are called such because they are wafer-like in this construction. They are very slim and sleek and do not require special housing.

Because of this, they are ideal for shallow ceiling plenum lighting where there is no space above the ceiling for the housing that would go along with an incandescent alternative. Some of these wafer lights are entirely housing free. While LEDs require drivers, if space is very tight, some of them can be operated with the help of a remote driver box that similarly would not take up too much room.

Advances in lighting technology have also made LED wafers equivalent or superior to alternatives. Modern LED downlights can not only be manufactured to be ultra-thin. They also offer excellent color temperatures, great light output, and more. There are models that promise easy installation and they are ideal if you intend to undertake any construction or remodeling efforts in the near future.
