US approves use of Regeneron treatment against COVID -19

Faced with the uncontrolled advance of the COVID-19 epidemic, which has infected 12 million people in its territory, the United States authorized the use of a treatment from the firm Regeneron, previously used by President Donald Trump.

The United States is by far the most mourning country in the world for the coronavirus, with 255,800 deaths. The epidemic is out of control and the number of new daily cases is skyrocketing (almost 164,000 on Saturday alone) and already exceeds 12 million infections, according to John Hopkins University.

According to the FDA, treatment with REGEN-COV2, a combination of two laboratory-made antibodies, has been shown to reduce hospitalizations or emergency room visits for COVID-19 patients with secondary illnesses or "comorbidities."

The company received more than 450 million dollars from the United States government for the development of treatments to fight against COVID-19 within the operation "Warp Speed", created by Trump to immunize the American population.
"Unprecedented vaccination"

Italy, where the pandemic has killed more than 48,000 people, will launch an "unprecedented vaccination campaign" at the end of January, starting with the citizens most exposed to the pandemic, Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza announced on Saturday.

The pandemic has killed at least 1.373 million people worldwide since the WHO office in China reported the onset of the disease in late December 2019, according to an AFP tally based on official sources. More than 57.5 million cases have been officially registered worldwide

In Europe, closures and other restrictions placed on the population in many countries to cope with the second wave of the epidemic are beginning to bear fruit. In France, where the number of new cases, deaths and admissions to intensive care is declining, authorities believe that the peak of the second wave has certainly been crossed.

The British government confirmed this Saturday that the four-week lockdown in England will not extend beyond December 2, when it will return to a system of local restrictions.
On the contrary, Portugal decided on Saturday to "tighten" restrictions to curb the epidemic, mainly with the closure of schools and public administrations on Monday, November 30 and December 7, both on the eve of holidays. The effectiveness of the Oxford vaccine against Covid-19 can reach 90%, according to trials

The Covid-19 vaccine being developed by the University of Oxford, in collaboration with AstraZeneca Plc, shows an average effectiveness of 70.4% in protecting against coronavirus, according to preliminary results of a phase 3 clinical trial published by the Swedish-British pharmacist. The company claims, however, that the antidote called ChAdOx1 nCov-2019 has been shown to be 90% effective in one of the two groups of volunteers studied.

The British drug regulator will analyze precisely the combination of doses that has given an effectiveness of 90%, as announced this Monday by the British Minister of Health, Matt Hancock. Hancock was "delighted" with the data and stressed that they indicate that "the vaccine, in the right dose, can be effective up to 90%.

Regarding the immunological capacity of the vaccine, Pollard pointed out at a press conference: "We are optimistic about an immune response that lasts at least one year", but these trials need more time to be able to give any confirmation of durability.

Preliminary results of the trial by the British pharmaceutical company mark a new advance in the fight against a pandemic that has killed about 1.4 million people and has devastated the world economy.

Sarah Gilbert, an Oxford professor of vaccinology and project leader, said that today's announcement “brings us one step closer to when we can use vaccines to end the devastation caused by Covid-19". “We will continue to work with regulators (who must authorize the vaccine). It has been a privilege to be part of a multinational effort that will reap benefits for everyone”, said the professor.

The European Union will have access to at least 300 million doses of this vaccine, which is made with a cold virus that affected genetically modified chimpanzees.

At least eight months. That is the immune memory that Covid offers to people who have passed the infection. The study, still under review, has been led by Shane Crotty's research group from the La Jolla Institute of Immunology in California (USA). For the authors, the results indicate that long-lasting immunity against a second infection is a possibility in most people.
