Kevin McWhinney was 18 and sitting by the water in Spain when he turned to his then girlfriend, now wife, Elaine and said: "One day I’ll build you a house with a view like this." It took 37 years but McWhinney, who runs the multimillion-pound business McWhinneys Sausages, has finally done it.

He has built four houses on Brompton Road in Bangor, Co Down, overlooking Belfast Lough. The wheels for the project were set in motion 10 years ago when he bought No 10 Brompton Road, a detached single-storey house sitting on a half-acre plot that sloped down towards the shore.

In 2016, McWhinney applied for planning permission to build three large detached houses, designed by architect Robert Gilmour. They were to be low-slung, cut into the site and have flat, green roofs. The external finish would be a mix of grey brick and glazing to complement the natural stone walls of the area.
