This crew setup has always worked well for me

Personally I always get the deck things first because there's just two. So when you wish to do a more Seafaring voyage for instance, it is a lot more helpful to have 2 Seafaring boosting deck things than just the bonus that the hull gives. Some folks will argue the rudder is better because it'll save you time allowing you to perform much more voyages/day, I can't argue against it but I've always done ports in a considerably more relaxed than efficient manner so I always get rudder past.

Then, the vents themselves: What is worth upgrading? I've noticed the majority of the updates are fairly expensive. I've been trying to upgrade my workplace to unlock a 3rd ship, but it's so horribly slow to accumulate bamboo. Well ideally you should prioritize the upgrades that unlock new boats for obvious reasons, so you are doing that right. I believe all upgrades are worth getting (except in the instances you have more than just one, you can unlock them all but you can only have one active at precisely the exact same time so pick wisely).

Concerning the team I essentially have 4'bureaucrat' (well the perfect is getting the best ones available to you at the timeI can not recall the names of any others therefore why I used bureaucrat - essentially the crew member that fosters the stats of other crew members) crew members; And then 4 Morale, 5 Seafaring and 4 Combat crew members; 3 Merchants; 4 special crew members (those that get unlocked through special voyages such as the Feral Chimera)

This crew setup has always worked well for me personally, but there is likely better setups. I will probably eliminate the Merchants soon and get more special crew members or something, because frankly I very seldom use Merchants. I used them just when I had been gathering trade goods to make the armours. As for the Captains I never cared about the Speed stat. I've 1 Morale, two Seafaring and two Combat Captains of the maximum tier readily available to me at the present time. (actually I think I unlocked a new tier lately but haven't found any of those new Capts yet)
