Window and room air conditioners use a lot of electrical energy, which can lead to less than maximum efficiency or even a total failure.
1 Make sure the device is plugged in and the switch is on. Make sure the thermostat is set to "cold" and below room temperature.
2 Make sure the electrical outlet works with a voltage tester or by plugging in a working lamp (only for standard voltage models - don't plug a lamp into a 220/240 volt socket!) To learn more about testing a socket, see Electrical Wiring Problems.
3 If the light does not turn on, the circuit has probably overloaded - check the electrical panel or fuse box and reset the circuit breaker or replace the fuse. For more information, see troubleshooting of household electrical problems.
4 If the light works, it is likely that the air conditioner switch is defective or that the thermostat needs to be cleaned or repaired.
5 Check the owner's manual for thermostat repair. This video shows a typical method of checking and cleaning the air conditioner thermostat:
If repairing the thermostat does not solve the problem, unplug the appliance and call an air conditioner repairer.
