Locate another gold mine early, and start planning to clear the area and expand to a second foundation. You also need to keep an eye for your competitor's expansions. If you have got two gold mines, and they have just got you, you're likely to be in a critical benefit.

To find out where your competitors are expanding too, though, you'll want to spend some time on recon. Sending a starting employee out to explore the map is a frequent tactic, but ensure that you replace them quickly to avoid missing out on prized early game tools. For later on, all factions have access to flying or invisible units that make for good scouts.
