Lee Murphy, 37, lost up to in one year on the controversial machines once gambling away a month's wages in a couple of hours.

He took his own life after losing in the space of 20 minutes at a casino months after saying he was hooked on the betting machines, reports the Daily Record.

His partner Wendy Bendel said: "The Government allowed these terminals into bookies but they now have to stop the despair these machines can cause.

"I guarantee there are more people out there like Lee."

The mum of two added: "When Lee blew his wages, he would go out and get payday loans.

"They were out of control. There were 10 payday loans that I was aware of.

"He also took out payday loans in my name which I didn't know about until the repayments started coming out of my bank account.

"Lee had my bank details, filled in an online application, received a email and deleted the email.

"He took the money out of my account and planned to pay it back with extra work he was expecting.

"Repayments came out my account after he died for another loan he had taken out my knowledge."

The couple were together for seven years.

Wendy, a business development said: "Lee was very clever, funny, handsome, great with my worked really hard and had lots of ambition.

"I could picture us growing old together. I wanted to be with him "He was a good person. He used to be a special constable and just wanted to help people.

"But there was the other side to his character that was addicted to His mood could change quickly and it was all centred around money.

"Lee would tell me he had lost all his money gambling but that he didn't have debt.

"Then I would find emails and texts from people looking for money. Even with physical evidence, he'd tell me I was wrong."

Wendy, of Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, only became aware of the depth of Lee's addiction when he tried to commit suicide in February last year.

In despair at his inability to take he tried to kill himself and was admitted to Royal Cornhill Hospital, a psychiatric facility in Aberdeen.

Wendy said: "He admitted to having a 20 year gambling addiction.

"He felt that the only way he could stop was to take his own life."

She highlighted deficiencies in the way gambling addicts are treated and insisted they do not receive the support given to drug addicts and Wendy said: "Lee was given a mental health wellness plan to fill in, which included his goals, barriers and action plan.

"But there was no support from with a medical background.

"There are rehabilitation centres for other types of addiction but nothing like that for people with a gambling addiction."
