A short while later, the woman and her partner, Michael Pan de Gruta were walking along the shore when the woman suddenly felt something on her back. She quickly turned to see a young fisherman, whom she knew was named Bertram, standing by the side of the shore waiting for her. When the astonished woman looked at the fisherman, she noticed that his hair was wet and he was leaning over the edge of the bank in an attempt to reach a faraway object.

Later in the evening, Michael and Bertram, along with Michael's friend, Frank Maggart, went to a small fishing shack to look for a fish. They were surprised to find a large carp swimming in their water. Realizing that it was a carp, the two fishermen asked what they could do to get the fish out of the water. A police officer standing next to the fishing shack, whose name was George Ischer, overheard the conversation and asked the men if they had seen a "big fish" earlier that day.
