Upper Mustang Trekking is a Himalayan trip into the Forbidden Land of Mustang, especially to its center- Lo Manthang. It is situated in the northern border region of the Annapurna Conservation area at an altitude of 4000 meters above sea level. The Upper Mustang region resembles the Tibetan plateau geographically and culturally as it borders Tibet. The valleys around Lo-Manthang are dry but surrounded by colorful flowers, sandy rock formations, and various cave settlements. The trek to Upper Mustang was opened for tourists only in 1992 as a restricted area trekking in Nepal.

Trek to Upper Mustang is one of the more expensive popular treks in Nepal. The walled city runs with the semi-independent authority. The trekking route of the Upper Mustang was used as the salt caravan route in history, crossing the Himalayan passes to reach the Tibetan plateau. The Tibetan-influenced ethnic villages are jeweled with the Monasteries, Chhortens, and religious sites. The trekking commences from the Kali Gandaki region of Jomsom, which is the center of the Mustang region. A picturesque flight from Pokhara takes you to Jomsom from where the trek begins. The barren cold deserted land with minimal vegetation with the view of snowcapped mountain peaks of Annapurna, Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, Tukuche and other smaller mountains are the main attraction. The Mustang region falls on the rain shadow area and has very little green cover however various species of high altitude flora and fauna are found. Thus the region is open for tourists during the monsoon season also. The people, culture, and traditions in the region are still little or not influenced by the western way of living. This trekking tour is suited best for people seeking to explore the Himalayan Buddhism Culture in its genuine form. The annual Tiji festival is one of the most important festivals of the people of the Upper Mustang region.
