The path that led to our evolving hybrid workplace

One year ago, we were quickly finding that the virus and its impact were just too complex to forecast. While we initially attempted to provide information based on particular timings and the phases through which the pandemic was anticipated to advance, we did not understand it well enough to accurately predict when each of those phases would occur. To keep our employees and communities safe, we quickly realized that we needed to establish a return-to-work site strategy that could account for continually changing public health situations and government guidelines. We also needed to drive a similar approach across geographies, resulting in a company-wide COVID-19 response effort.

With this in mind, we created a Hybrid Workplace Dial that is anchored to six defined stages rather than precise dates, allowing us to instantly modify our work sites based on health conditions while remaining data-driven in our decision-making. The dial assists us in allocating a stage to each of our work sites based on current local health statistics and government recommendations. When the local disease burden improves, we can move a work site forward, but we can also dial back when we see dips in progress. Each stage is defined by a collection of data-driven criteria as well as site readiness assessments, and it is accompanied by a set of specified policies.
