Die Geschichte der Erforschung der Sexualhormone hat seinen Ursprung in Österreich. Zwei österreichische Forscher sind für die Entwicklung der Pille verantwortlich.
Ein österreichischer Wissenschaftler ist der Erfinder
In der englischen Sprach gibt es den Begriff "to be steinached". Dieser nimmt Bezug auf den österreichischen Wissenschaftler Eugen Steinach. Er war der Pioniere in der Erforschung der Sexualhormone.
"To be steinached" bezeichnet, dass sich ein Mann einer "Vasektomie" unterzogen hat. Dabei kommt es zu einer Durchtrennung der Samenleiter. In früheren Zeiten wurde eine Vasektomie vorgenommen, in der Hoffnung auf eine verjüngende Wirkung, jedoch nicht um Unfruchtbarkeit zu erzeugen.
Der Entwicklungsprozess der Antibabypille
Steinachs Grundansatz war richtig, denn Sexualität und Fortpflanzung werden durch Gewebe gesteuert. Bereits 1910 zeigte Steinach, dass männliche Meerschweinchen nach einer Transplantation von Eierstöcken eine weibliche Entwicklung durchlaufen. Das entwickelte Sexualhormon, Östron, wurde zu damaligen Zeiten eingesetzt, um Wechselbeschwerden zu behandeln. Damals wurde es jedoch nicht zur Empfängnisverhütung angewendet.
Diese war die Idee eines anderern österreichischen Forschers, Ludwig Haberlandt. Er entdeckte bei einem Versuchen an Ratten, dass durch eine Schwangerschaft das Heranreifen weiterer Eizellen verhindert wird. 1919 stellte er fest: "Empfängnisverhütung besteht also in einer hormonell vorgetäuschten Schwangerschaft". Er erarbeitete seine Forschungsergebnisse in Kooperation mit führenden Arzneimittelherstellern, wie E. Merck, und stand dabei in engem Kontakt mit Steinach.
Die Idee der Antibabypille führte zur Revolution
Haberlandts Idee zur Empfängnisverhütung stieß zur damaligen Zeit auf heftige Kritik. Katholische und konservative Kreise betrachteten Schwangerschaftsverhütung als ein Verbrechen an ungeborenem Leben. Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts war allgemein bekannt, dass Progesteron ein Hormon zur Verhinderung einer Schwangerschaft darstellt. Zehn Jahre nach der Entwicklung löste die Antibabypille eine Revolution aus. Die Idee für die Pille sowie die Entwicklung Ihrer Inhaltsstoffe ist somit eine österreichische Geschichte. Heute ist die Antibabypille das meist verwendete Verhütungsmittel weltweit.
