How Does A Kitchen Chimney Work?

Installing a kitchen chimney will ensure that smoke, oil and odour arising out of cooking gets trapped inside and is not released in the home environment. This trapping will keep your kitchen clean and will prevent breathing issues.

A lot of solid and liquid microscopic particles are released in air while cooking. These particles consist of small food particles, oil, water vapour, smoke and odour fumes. These tiny particles are harmful for people living and can cause respiratory issues.

Below is the mechanism of how kitchen chimney works.

Solid and liquid particles emitted during cooking process pass through the chimney. The grease gets trapped inside the filter and moisture and smoke are released into the environment through the ducts.

There are two types of chimneys, with duct and without duct.

The ducted chimneys have duct to release the smoke into outside air while ductless chimney doesn’t have a duct. This is the only major difference between these two. Also, ductless chimneys have additional carbon filter which ducted chimneys don’t have.

Principle Of Chimney Cleaning

In ductless chimneys, when a cooking air enters the chimney, the grease filters remove the oil droplets from the air. This process works primarily on the principle of a hot air changing its direction quickly and multiple times through the fine mesh filter causing the steam and grease to condense and separate. When this air now passes further through carbon filter, odour, smoke particles and vapours are eliminated. This air is then again released back into the house.

Ducted chimneys are more expensive than ductless chimneys. But their filters can be washed and hence the maintenance cost of ducted chimneys is very less.

Alternatively, grease filters of ductless chimneys can be washed but the carbon filters are non-washable and hence need to be replaced every few months. This makes it more expensive to maintain.
