Straw is an excellent substrate for growing mushrooms. As a waste product from agriculture, it is usually very cheap, so you can get a lot of it for very little money. While your mushrooms will love straw, be penis envy mushrooms aware that it can be a bit messy to work with because you have to cut, clean and pasteurize it. Unless you're a commercial mushroom grower who buys huge quantities of straw from a farm, it's probably worth buying a small pack at a garden store. This straw is often already cut and cleaned. OTHER SUBSTRATES AND MIXTURES FOR MAGIC MUSHROOMS

Chances are you won't have a problem finding all or at least some of the substrates we've listed for growing your magic mushrooms. But if for any reason you can't, or just want to experiment, there are other things you can use. Look for cellulose-based materials such as paper and cardboard, as well as grain scraps and even tea leaves. You probably won't know which substrate works best for your type of mushroom until you try them. If you look on the internet you can find many DIY mushroom substrate recipes.

Some growers are more interested in finding new and great recipes for substrates than growing the mushrooms themselves. You will have no problem finding people online with whom you can talk about mushrooms and share your experiences.

THE BEST SUBSTRATE FOR PSILOCYBE CUBENSIS MUSHROOMS

So what is the best substrate for growing Psilocybe cubensis, namely our magic mushrooms and truffles? In our experience it is coconut and vermiculite blends, but straw and manure also give great results.

This isn't to say you shouldn't use other materials, but some of these substrates may be harder to find or are only optimal when mixed. Coconut and vermiculite in a 1: 1 mix provide optimal nutrition and have the perfect structure for growing, so it's one of our favorite substrates.
