Cotton garments, especially cotton garments that are made from 100% cotton fabric, are naturally soft and comfortable. That much is no secret, and anyone who has ever owned one can attest to the softness and breathability of a 100% cotton jacket, among other things.

Since cotton is a natural fiber, a 100% cotton jacket will not irritate your skin and cotton is even great for people with sensitive skin and allergies that might not be able to handle synthetics, although there are a number of other reasons as well that synthetics might not be ideal.

Cotton is soft and strong, and it’s strength actually increases when the fibers are wet which means that cotton is great for standing up to years of use and many, many washes. Cotton is naturally stretch-resistant so it will keep its shape admirably even if you wear it day in and day out. Best of all, cotton is breathable, so while it will keep you snug and warm in the winter, it will also keep you comfortable when the temperatures are on the rise.

Yet this is not the only ace up the sleeve of a 100% cotton jacket. In addition to these benefits mentioned here, all-natural 100% cotton has some other significant points over synthetic fabrics, which are more often than not blended into cotton garments to take advantage of their purported benefits.

A lot of manufacturers use synthetic fibers like polyester, rayon, and other fibers like nylon and acrylic, oftentimes because they make the claim that they help the garment hold its shape. The truth is more along the lines of the fact that these fibers are simply more affordable to produce than natural fibers like cotton.

While they are cheaper to produce, they actually are not the best for people with sensitive skin, and worse of all, they are generally terrible for the environment. Whereas cotton is a safe and natural fiber that can be sustainably and reliably produced (as well as returned to the earth, if the need ever came to it) synthetic fibers are a bear for the environment.

Synthetics like polyester and nylon are polluting water sources at an alarming rate and these fibers are not biodegradable. Worst of all, producing them adds toxins to the environment. The same could be said for other synthetics like rayon, as well as the dyes that are used with them. They might be cheap up front, but the long-term costs are not worth it. That’s not even to mention that cotton is more resilient and more comfortable.
