Should you kill a sea monster, then they may have been carrying gold or other products. These will be OSRS Accounts stored in a treasure chest only as long as you'd constructed one which requires 6 planks, 3 steel bars, 19 building and a little battleship or higher. Once you completely destroy a boat meaning shoot it with cannons reducing it's health all the things in their treasure chest will be set in yours. You can't take things from your chest until you port the ship. Paddleboats will not offer you anything if you destroy them.

A cannonball lodged into the boat will take from 5 wellness to 11 wellbeing from the ship. As soon as your ship is destroyed, you will respawn in the port that your ship was previously docked at and you can ask a Shipworker to fix your ship for a charge. You won't loose any things from your inventory, fortunately.

The boat wilderness will provide you a much better chance at catching larger fish on fishing trips but has a dangerous side too: your ship can be destroyed. This is where all of the significant sea monsters are and where battles take place. Mogres may board your boat, but the remainder is found on your minimap and shot at with arrows, magical or cannons.
