There is a medical strategy for persons who are at high risk of contracting HIV that drastically reduces the risk of contracting HIV. PrEP stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis. PrEP is an antiretroviral treatment that helps HIV-negative persons stay HIV-free even if they have sex without a condom with partners who are HIV-positive or unknown.

In this example, "high risk" is defined as having one or more HIV-positive sexual partners. It can also refer to having intercourse in an area where HIV is prevalent, as well as one or more of the following risks:

* Inconsistent or non-use of condoms
* Infections spread through sexual contact
* Sex is exchanged for money, food, shelter, and narcotics.
* Use of illegal drugs or alcoholism
* Incarceration
* Unknown HIV status partners with any of the following hazards.

PrEP is recommended for men who have intercourse with other men, transgender people, adult heterosexually active men and women, and injectable drug users who are at high risk of contracting HIV.

This is a big step forward for homosexual and bisexual guys, men who have sex with males but don't identify as gay, and transgender people's health. It puts men's sexual health into the realm of primary care.
