About This Game

Beyond Eden is a visual novel set in the Victorian era, centering on the themes of "love-hate" and "revenge."
The player enters the shoes of Alex Wake, a young businessman who returns to a Baron’s mansion where he stayed as a boy. Bearing a deep grudge against the Baron and his family, Alex seeks to manipulate them and their employees in order to lead the family down the path of destruction.
Alex can develop dark and complex relationships with 6 male characters. It depends on you, the player, to steer the story towards foreseeable tragedies or help Alex discover the faint chance of redemption.

It is the late Victorian era, a time of drastic social upheaval and shifting values.

But then a man arrives to disturb its tranquility—a man who spent his boyhood at the estate has now returned after 10 years.
The Baron Edenic—the master of the house—and his four sons, the doctor, and the servants greet him with wariness, joy, or unfamiliarity.

I'm surprised this does not have more negative reviews. I'm surprised people are allowed to keep this on the store.

I really tried not to judge this game and finish all routes but I couldn't. (Some of my run-time is from literally having to walk away from the computer). I finished Morris, Theodore, Oscar, Jeremy, and part of Joshua's route. I did not play Laurence's route until just now and... ok his is amazing. His route is the only one that is worth playing at all. It ends rather abruptly, but it tells the entire story and has the best character development and story progression WITHOUT THE R*PE.

For the rest of it though...
THIS IS NOT A BL or "BOYS LOVE" GAME. THIS IS STRAIGHT UP BOYS R*PE GAME

The description says "dubious consent/non-consensual sex" .... There is nothing dubious about it. You blackmail and emotionally manipulate them to bend or break them, you physically beat some of them, you pound into some until they cry out for you to stop and beg you to stop.... and you don't. You relish their cries and laugh at them. And that is in the good routes!

This. Is. Messed. Up

Constructive criticism: Don't make the main character a deranged, aggressive, psychopathic, r*pist. Seriously though, his reasons for his hatred are NOT able to justify how he acts in any way, shape, or form. He has little character development, and enough time to actually talk through his problems with the past is never given. Romantic relationships are not built. I would say they don't exist in this honestly. (Except for Laurence) He can be evil, manipulative, and full of revenge plans FINE. But to add all of the non-con stuff in there and to even try to twist some of them into consensual relationships is sick. The r*pe them until they like it or because they secretly like it mindset is terrifying.. couldv'e been great. on the surface, this is a beautiful game with gorgeous visuals, spectacular voice acting, a fitting soundtrack, and a well-paced, intriguing storyline.

in the end, however, this game is seriously problematic NOT because it's dark, or the fact that it contains sexual assault - it was the treatment and portrayal of the matter.♥♥♥♥♥♥scenes occur inevitably in at least 3 of the routes, and all of those routes have the possibility for a "good end." that is seriously misleading. there is no relationship that can develop from a basis of manipulation/assault into something healthy or positive, and acting like it does presents a false and dangerous message. this kind of mentality is one that is perpetuated by the BL industry in Japan, and while it is nice that this game avoids some of the common tropes from that sphere of influence (i.e. stereotypical sexual roles, sexualization of minors) it fails to rise above it completely through its justification of sexual abuse and manipulation.

yes, most people here will eagerly dismiss the claims i'm making and argue that fiction has no effect on the real ideology despite plenty of research that suggests otherwise. my one negative review will probably not influence anyone, which makes me sad becuase i really did want to love this game, it's honestly such a shame.. THIS REVIEW WILL ONLY BE HELPFUL IF YOU LIKE KOREAN VOICE ACTORS FROM CHERITZ GAMES AND/OR BLs:

  [**] My favorite Nameless character in an even more mature role but...his route wasn't easy to listen/read through because I liked him so much T_T

  [**] This revelation made me gasp. I never really really liked Yoosung but got intrigued with Edward and wasn't disappointed. HOMEBOI NEEDS A ROUTE DEVS

• Essentially, if you want to hear these VAs in more mature, adult scenarios and enjoy or don't mind BL, GET THIS GAME. YOU WON'T REGRET IT.

So outside of the VA fangirling, the plot is pretty interesting as you can garner from the summary and from other reviews so I won't divulge here. And although there isn't MUCH romance, there is great character development in some of the routes not only for the MC/Alex but for the other characters as well. It's honestly one of those games where I ended up not really playing for the sexual content (although...no complaints :x huhuuu), but I actually wanted to read on and see what the heck some of the characters were thinking/planning/going to do next.

also let me just say, based on some of the reviews, i was fearing the ends/routes were going to be soul crushingly awful but they are NO WHERE as bad as I thought. Yes, there's non-con smexy time and one route in particular was a bit hard to read through (my poor Yuri ;_;) but none seriously questioned my sanity or in humanity that made me want to mind bleach the hell out of my memories (cough DMMD COUGH CHOKE COUGH Hadaka ♥♥♥♥♥uji ugh).

My only issues would be:

• Kind of short for a $30+ game and doesn't have full voice acting (even though I went back and chose every single dialogue choice available (because I really wanted to see the different character reactions, worth it!), got every ending, procured every CG and it all took less than 18 hours).
  
• Wish they offered subtitles in both the original Korean alongside English
  
• The only other issue I had was that some of the endings...didn't feel like endings. Felt like I read the penultimate chapter and the book just ends! I really craved for an epilogue or something with more closure, but maybe they can add DLCs? If so...THAT'D BE PERFECTION.

But seriously, this game would be one of my BL favs, potentially rivalling Luckydog, NYT, coming out on top and lowkey DMMD orz So if you like BLs with a bit of intrigue, complex characters, and don't mind not having a lovey dovey romance but still just as satisfying character interactions, get the game or at least test out the demo :]. I love this game. It's one of my favorites. The story is great. Revenge, love, lust, and mystery.. An absolutely brilliant game. Definitely would recommand it to people who enjoy the genre! My personal score is 120/100 and I admit I haven't even finished it. I have only fully explored one character's story (namely Joshua's) and IT IS AMAZING. I've only just finished it but I am going to play it again right away. I loved everything about it. The story is great. The BEs are gorgeously sinister and nihilistic, while the HE is so bright and indeed hopeful. The character design is also wonderful. Though there may be some cliche, they have done it really well and everyone seems really interesting with their own unique psychological fears and needs.
I must admit the Korean voice acting put me off a little bit at first, but I suppose that is simply because I am much more used to Japanese games. It took a little bit of time for adjustment but overall it did not affect my gaming experience.
And I suppose... it may not be for the faint of heart? I personally love this kind of story but it's probably not for everyone, despite the fact that it isn't THAT dark. It's quite dark; and has elements that are not for everyone's taste. A matter of personal preferece, though I do feel sorry for those that miss out because of such reasons XD


[SPOILERS ALERT]
The only thing I am less satisfied with is the fact that... some of the plots still have clear potentials that can be developed further. Jealousy is one that I saw another comment mentioning. The plot with Catherine could easily delve deeper, yet it did not. The actual destruction of the house is another that I would love to see, and I was surprised with the rather abrupt ending of Joshua's BE Blood Sacrifice. It was still good, but the dark momentum that was building up until that point was kind of left hanging after the line ended. And I admit I'm just so malicous that I really want like to see Alex using his tools to break the house apart. There are other instances of such slight fustrations. It is a great game, but I just love it so much I want it to be even greater!. The story is about a man, Alex Wake, who lives only for revenge. But, as he encounters each of the 6 romantic interests, he discovers that his revenge is pretty much baseless.
At first, he is...mean, really mean. He r*pes and blackmail some characters, that way the game makes you understand that Alex lost his mind, and it's up to you to make him go to the right path again. I'm not saying r*pe and blackmail are good things. This were the things I didn't like in this game. I just appreciate the fact that Alex can have a chance to be someone trustworthy again, since he pretty much lost it.
The art is great, the music and the voice acting too.
I saw that the youngest son, Jeremy, had a route. I was afraid that Alex would have a romantic relationship with him, but I'm relieved to say that this is not the case. I woudn't have bought it that way. In my opinion, Jeremy's first ending is the most satisfaying, and the cutest.
As for the price... I wouldn't know, since I brought this game during a sale!
Last, but not least... Please. PLEASE. PLEASE!! Give Edward a full route. He deserves it. He's cute! I think Alex and Edward could help each other to become better people.. A complex and intriguing story, beautiful sprite/CG art, and real erotic heat mostly make up for weak background art and (especially) an awful translation. Studio Pieplus: please, please, please have a native English speaker edit your next translation! It's not just that the language is stilted; there are places where the translator wrote literally the opposite of the meaning of the original line. You're asking too much for this game to offer something so unprofessional in this respect.. Yes yes very nice, victorian dudes smooching each other as part of a revenge plot, 10/10 would unlock all h scenes again
