The Singapore Bang Tree, also called the King Choy, is a stunning bonsai. It is the most well-known bonsai in Singapore and was named when a merchant from Fujian, China visited Singapore in the early 1990s. This tree had been purchased from an Hong Kong shop. An Singaporean named Lim Siow Jin decided to plant the bonsai in Singapore and it quickly became well-known.

The term Singapore bang tree originates from the Chinese character for 'silver tree' (tang), which refers to a kingfisher. The bonsai is a sluggish growing tree that reaches up to around 30 feet in the height. The silver-colored foliage results from interweaving silver wires. Many believe that the bonsai represents of the Chinese tradition of acupuncture, but there isn't any solid evidence to support this. It is also thought to be an interspersing of a pine and palm tree.

The bonsai begins as a small tree which has been completely covered with green leaves. The tree will grow to six feet tall and the branches will reach up to 3 feet in diameter. The bonsai is just a small rootless branch which is cared for by a group of caretaker's known as the sapling crew. The branches are always supplied with fresh soil from the top of the bonsai tree.

Once the tree reaches full size, it's taken indoors and placed in an specially designed bonsai container specifically made for the tree Cây Bàng Singapore. It will form beautiful designs on the top of the pot when it expands.
